Troubleshooting black screen issues on HP Notebooks: Click here to view the instructions!
HP Recommended

My laptop screen started glitching and would be stuck after a few minutes of using it. I tried resetting it and it removed windows when it came to the part of installing windows again it just started glitching again. I tried installing windows through a USB but it would still end up the glitching screen.

So right now I'm stuck with a laptop with no OS and glitches when I try installing a new OS, I'm not sure if updating the BIOS will help or installing new display drivers will sort the issue. I thought asking for help first before I ruin it further as I already did with trying to reset it.

Hi @iimpeccable

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're facing a pretty frustrating issue with your laptop’s screen glitching and freezing during the Windows installation process. The fact that it continues to glitch even when trying to install a fresh OS suggests that it could be either a hardware issue (like with the display or graphics card) or a firmware/driver issue.

Let’s walk through the possibilities and troubleshooting steps before you do anything that might make the situation worse.

1. Check for Hardware Issues (Display, GPU, etc.)

The glitching could be a result of a hardware failure, such as issues with the display or graphics card. Before jumping into software or BIOS changes, here are a few things you can check:

External Monitor Test

  • Test with an external monitor or TV. If the glitching only happens on the laptop’s internal screen and the external monitor works fine, then the issue is likely with the internal display or the connections to the screen (cables, display panel, etc.).
    • If both the internal screen and the external monitor show the glitching, then the problem is more likely related to your laptop’s GPU or system board.

Reseat Connections (if you're comfortable opening the laptop)

  • If you’re comfortable working with the hardware, you could try reseating the display cable that connects your screen to the motherboard. Sometimes, a loose or damaged cable can cause flickering or glitching.

2. Update or Reset BIOS

If the issue isn’t hardware-related, it could be a BIOS or firmware issue that’s causing the glitching. BIOS updates can resolve certain compatibility issues with display drivers or hardware, but you should proceed carefully with this.

To update/reset the BIOS:

  1. Enter BIOS:
    • Restart the laptop and press the required key (often F2, DEL, Esc, or another key depending on your laptop’s make) to enter the BIOS or UEFI settings.
  2. Reset BIOS Settings:
    • Once in BIOS, look for an option to restore defaults or reset to default settings. This will ensure that the system is not running any non-default settings that might be causing the issue.
  3. Check for BIOS Updates:
    • Some laptops allow you to update the BIOS directly from within the BIOS settings. If your laptop offers this feature, check if there’s a BIOS update available on the manufacturer’s website. If you can get the laptop to boot into BIOS and connect it to the internet, this might be an easy fix.

3. Install Windows via USB (Booting Troubles)

If the screen glitches even when you're installing Windows from a USB drive, the problem might not just be the OS itself—it could be related to USB compatibility, installation media corruption, or the driver issue that’s already causing the glitching.

Try the following steps:

Create a fresh bootable USB:

  • Use Rufus or the Media Creation Tool to create a fresh Windows installation USB.
  • Make sure that the USB is formatted in FAT32 (if using UEFI mode) or NTFS (if using Legacy mode), as the format can affect the installation process.

Use Safe Mode or Minimal Installation:

  • If the glitching happens only after installation, you might want to try booting in Safe Mode after the install, which loads only essential drivers. This might help isolate if it's a driver issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
