Troubleshooting black screen issues on HP Notebooks: Click here to view the instructions!

HP 17 Laptop PC 17-cp3000 (B03B8AV)
Linux

When I power on the laptop it will not display on its own screen.  If I plug in an external monitor with an HDMI cable, it will display on the monitor.  The laptop's display will remain blank.

@SereneEase, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Since your HP laptop works with an external monitor but not its internal display, this indicates a problem with the laptop screen, display cable, or display hardware, rather than the GPU or motherboard. Let’s go through the troubleshooting steps.

Perform a Hard Reset

Disconnect the charger and remove any peripherals.

If the battery is removable, remove it.

Press and hold the power button for 15–20 seconds.

Reconnect power (and battery if removed) and try powering on.

Check Display Settings in Windows

While connected to the external monitor, right-click the desktop and select Display settings.

Ensure that the laptop’s internal display is detected and set as Primary Display.

If it shows as disconnected, the laptop is not recognizing the screen.

Update or Reinstall Graphics Drivers

With the external monitor connected, go to Device Manager > Display adapters, and update or reinstall your graphics drivers.

Sometimes the internal screen fails if the driver miscommunicates with the display hardware.

I suggest you refer to this guide for further troubleshooting steps: HP PCs - Computer starts but the screen remains blank (Windows 11, 10) | HP® Support

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello, I didn't reply in time and my ticket was closed.  I apologize.  I was too busy to answer.

I would like to reopen the ticket.

I tried the suggestions, and the system would not respond.  I still have a display on my external monitor and non on my laptop screen.  I tried reinstalling the drivers with no success.  BTW, my system is not running Windows 11, but Linux Mint 22.2

What would be our next step?

Thanks,

Bill
