My crazy mouse syndrome is well reported on the web, but have found no solutions. The mouse goes erratic and unusable after some time of normal operation. Restarting the computer restores normal operation, but after a while it goes erratic again. The problem seems to have started after a Windows 10 update, but getting any useful assistance from Microsoft has proved impossible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Check the Mouse options under control panel:
Start → Control Panel → Mouse → Buttons tab.
Check the box labeled "Use MS Office compatible scroll only."
Also, check the box below labeled "Scroll in active window only."
If the issue persists, attempt the below steps:
Attempt using an alternate/external mouse.
(If that works when the touchpad is disabled on Synaptic software, it would mean that it's a touchpad failure,
However, if the external mouse doesn't work either, it could be a software/driver issue).
Uninstall and reinstall the drivers for your mouse:
Go to the Device Manager and select your mouse. Uninstall it and then restart your computer. During restart, your mouse driver will automatically be reinstalled.
-
1. Click on Start and type ‘Device Manager’.
-
2. Click Device Manager.
-
3. Click + sign next to Mouse.
-
4. Right-click on mouse entry and choose "uninstall".
-
5. Restart your computer.
Let me know if this helps.

Thanks Betty0610 for your reply. Unfortunately the answers are the usual list of try this and that. The problem occurs on the built in touch pad and on a bluetooth cordless, with no difference for either on its own or both active at the same time. Do you have anything more specific than you first list of suggestions??

I have been dealing with the same issue for a while. jumpy cursor and making involuntary selections on screen. Reboot provides a temporary fix, but having to reboot a dozen times a day Have not been able to find a fix. new mouse did not fix, could it be an issue with the touch screen?

To Haggs137. It is good to see that other users recognize this problem. To be fare to HP, it is happening on a number of other brands of computers as reported on numerous forums. It is clearly a Microsoft issue, and is frequently reported as having become evident after a software update. The trouble is that it is impossible to get any meaningful support from Microsoft. All they have is standard per-recorded replies that have little or no relevance to your issue. So I came to the HP site hoping that they might have a bit more insight into what is going on and how to fix it. No luck so far!!
