My question is, is it a good idea to apply a screen protector to my laptop's screen? I recently visited a nearby HP service center, and they said it is not necessary to apply a screen protector and that it might damage the screen. However, my concern is that while closing the lid, the keyboard might leave imprints on the screen. Any opinion?

You might want to read this

However, instead of a "cover skin" you might just want to use a pair of thin spacer tabs or "bumpers" commonly used to suspend glass from the table surface.
I had to do that on an old laptop that the designers thought a red "nub" was better than touch pad.
That red dot put a terrible spot on the display.
