Hello HP

My screen brightness keeps going down all by itself at various intervals during the day.

I have the latest graphics driver installed

How can this be helped?

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • Are you using any software or app which reduce eye strain or invert display color?
  • Did this happen after a recent window or software update?
  • Have you made any hardware/software changes?
  • When was the last time it worked fine?

While you respond to that, let's try these steps:

Hard Reset: Follow steps from the link: https://hp.care/2GnkMa8. (do not skip any troubleshooting steps even if you feel steps are repeating)

BIOS default:

  1. Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
  2. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
  3. On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
  4. Press F10 to Save and Exit.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
  6. Follow the prompts to restart your computer.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

I have f.lux installed which helps filter out blue light to help with eye strain.

I've recently reinstalled my graphics drivers.

Also I have changed a registry key to do with the intel graphics because a windows help forum said so, so now it happens less.

No it didn't happen after a recent software or hardware update. I might have installed some software but it doesn't seem to be the cause.

The last time it worked was 2-3 months ago.

Here's a quote from lenovo advice reposted on Tech Guy forum

"Currently, there is a step shared by a community user - changing registry.

1- Install latest driver of  the Intel Graphics card driver
2- install latest driver of your graphic card
3- This step will fix the problem:
- go to registery by regedit and change the value to 0xf048

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000]
"FeatureTestControl"=dword:0000f048
OR
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0001]
"FeatureTestControl"=dword:0000f048

Hello again

I still have the same problem of the brightness keeping on going down. It's just seemingly happening less often but it still happens.

Do you have any other ideas?

Thank you for posting back.

Firstly, perform Windows Update and HP Support Assistant: (do not skip any troubleshooting steps if you feel steps are repeating)

To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Install updates from HP Support Assistant: Go to Download HP Support Assistant to install the tool.

  1. To open HP Support Assistant, double-click the HP Support Assistant icon https://support.hp.com/doc-images/932/c05040382.jpg.
  2. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
  3. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
  4. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
  5. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
  6. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

I have installed all the updates from HP Support Assistant and Windows Update doesn't let me install anything as when I click "download and install" the progress bar stays at 0% for over 24 hours.
