Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Long story short:

My laptop monitor went bad so I completely disconnected it from the laptop and attempted to use it as a desktop with an external monitor through HDMI.

I was not able to see BIOS or see booting options on the extended monitor. Windows was crashing. So I went ahead and I installed Linux and it finally was able to show Linux through the extended monitor.

I wanted to get Windows back into the system but since I wasn't able to load up booting options or BIOS, I took out the HDD and connected it to an adapter and externally installed windows on it. I tried it on another system and I am able to boot Windows. But, when I put it back on the HP laptop, the extended monitor is black all the way to the log in screen (I am able to tell because of the sounds)
I have tried F4, Windows Key+P to try to bring display to the monitor, but no success.

Any ideas? Thank you!

@JonC86 Welcome to HP Community!

I understand that you are not getting the BIOS screen on the external display.

The BIOS settings will not work on the external monitor, You have to change the display.

I would suggets you contact our phone support and check for the support option. They will help you.

Or you can contact the local service center for repair.

Here is how you can get in touch with phone support.

1)Click on this link - www.hp.com/contacthp/

2)Select the product type.

3)Enter the serial number of your device or select let HP detect your product option.

4)Select the country from the drop-down.

5)You should see the HP phone support number or Chat option listed.

We are experiencing longer than expected wait times to reach an agent due to the CoViD-19 impact and there might have been issues in you getting the expected resolution on the issue.

hmm. maybe disconnecting the original screen has something to do with it. I didn't think you could do that with laptops.
