I have made numerous trips around the HP world with no success. I'm looking for the video driver for my laptop since window 10 apparently wiped it. Support Assistant was no help. HELP.

Unfortunately it tells me that the best driver has already been installed and everything stops there.

Hi:
What is the product number of your dv9700?
The product number can be found on the same sticker as the serial number.
Your notebook is only supported by HP for Windows Vista, so there won't be any W10 drivers available.
You will have to make do with the Vista drivers.
The Vista graphics driver will have to be manually installed because when you run it, you will get an unsupported operating system error.

See if this works...
Download and run this Vista 32 bit graphics driver from your notebook's support page.
This package contains the driver for the NVIDIA GeForce Series video chip in the supported notebook models and operating systems.
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp42501-43000/sp42635.exe
You most likely will get an unsupported operating system error. Close out of any error windows.
Go to the device manager and click to expand the Display Adapters device manager category.
Click on the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.
Click on the driver tab. Click on Update Driver.
Select the Browse my computer for driver software option, and browse to the driver folder that was created when you ran the driver.
That folder will be located in C:\SWSetup\sp42635.
Make sure the Include Subfolders box is checked, and hopefully the driver will install that way.
Then restart the PC.

Try this, and if it doesn't work, unfortunately I don't have any other suggestions for you...
Click on the Microsoft Basic display adapter, click on the driver tab. Click on Update Driver.
Select the Browse my computer for driver software option, but this time select the Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.
Click on Have Disk and browse to C:\SWSetup\sp42635\WinVista32\nvqh (setup information file), select the model video adapter your notebook has, and see if the driver installs that way.

I followed your instructions but they didn't work. The driver wasn't on the list. So using windows explorer, I happened to see the setup.exe file in the folder to which you directed me and decided to give it a try. It didn't install but suggested I try it in compatibility mode. I clicked on that and tried again. It worked! I wouldn't have found it without your advice. Hope this helps if you have someone else with the same problem.
