Hello. I bought my new HP computer about 3 weeks ago. Ever since the beginning the screen has been flickering sometimes. It happens incoherently. The screen goes black for a millisecond. What could be causing this?

Hi @Sanna123

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I'm really sorry you're dealing with this—screen flickering on a brand-new computer can be incredibly distracting and disappointing, especially when it happens randomly and without warning.

That brief blackout you’re describing typically points to one of three root causes: graphics driver instability, display refresh rate conflicts, or background power management settings.

Let’s walk through a focused recovery path to help stabilize your screen:

Step-by-Step Fix for Random Screen Flickering

1. Update Graphics Drivers

Outdated or mismatched drivers are the most common trigger.

  • Visit your model’s support page:
    HP Drivers & Software
  • Enter your exact model number and download the latest Intel or NVIDIA graphics driver
  • Install and restart your computer

2. Adjust Display Refresh Rate

Some panels flicker when set to unsupported refresh rates.

  • Go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display settings
  • Set the refresh rate to 60 Hz (or the recommended value)
  • Apply and test for stability

3. Disable Hardware Acceleration

Apps like browsers or video players can trigger flickering.

  • In Chrome or Edge:
    • Go to Settings > System
    • Toggle off Use hardware acceleration when available
  • Restart the browser and observe behavior

4. Check Power and Sleep Settings

Aggressive power-saving modes can cause display resets.

  • Go to Settings > System > Power & Battery > Screen and Sleep
  • Set Turn off screen and Sleep to longer intervals (e.g., 30 minutes)
  • Disable Adaptive brightness if available

5. Run HP Diagnostics

This checks for panel or GPU faults.

I understand how disruptive this has been, and I truly hope these steps help restore a smooth, flicker-free experience. If you’d like help interpreting diagnostic results or navigating the driver update, I’m here to assist.
