I have four of the above laptops. Purchased in 2017.  EVERY one of them now has no display when powered up.  I've tried using the function keys and the Windows key combinations to change the display or brighten the screen to no effect.  Truly disheartening this has happened of 4 machines almost all at the same time.  I get no display if I plug in an HDMI cable to an external monitor.  I even swapped the hard drive in one, all to no avail.

I found the answer!  Doing a BIOS reset resolved the problem.  Must have been bad updates that caused the issue.

How did you do a bios reset with a blank display?

To do a bios reset, unplug any peripherals/memory cards, plug in the power adapter.  Press and hold down the Windows and B keys, then press the power button for 3 seconds or so.  Release the power button, but keep holding down the Windows and B keys until you see the display, then follow the prompts for a bios reset.  Easy!

After I press the power button while holding the Start and B keys the computer starts emitting very loud beeps.  This continues until I release the keys.  Nothing appears on the laptop display.

This computer is 10 to 12 years old, and the problem started after a Microsoft Windows automatic update.  I suspect the computer is no longer supported by Windows 10.  I can not find any source who can tell me if it is not supported.

This procedure worked for a couple of different models of HP laptops/tablets.  I am not sure how widespread this feature is.  Just to confirm, when you say 'Start", that is the key with the Windows logo on it, correct?  That is the one that worked for me.  If yours is a laptop/tablet, you can also try connecting to an external monitor and use the windows+p key combination to see if you get any dialog to set screen sharing/mirroring.
