Hi @Gilou85000,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Laptop - 17 is not detecting its camera, and since there's no camera shutter key, the issue could be related to the driver or the camera settings. Here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot the problem.

Check Camera in Device Manager

  • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  • Look for Cameras or Imaging devices.
    • If it's listed, right-click on the camera and select Enable (if it's disabled) or Update driver.
    • If it's not listed or has a yellow warning icon, it might be a driver issue.

Reinstall Camera Driver

  • Right-click the camera in Device Manager and select Uninstall device.
  • After the uninstallation, restart your laptop. Windows will attempt to reinstall the camera driver automatically.

Run Camera Troubleshooter

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  • Select Camera, then run the troubleshooter and follow the on-screen instructions.

Check Privacy Settings

  • Go to Settings > Privacy > Camera.
  • Ensure that Allow apps to access your camera is turned on.
  • Scroll down and make sure the specific apps you want to use with the camera have permission.

Check Windows Updates

  • Make sure your Windows 10/11 is fully updated. Sometimes, missing updates can affect hardware like cameras.
  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates.

BIOS Settings (if applicable)

  • Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI (usually by pressing F10, F2, or ESC during boot).
  • Look for an option related to the camera and make sure it is enabled.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi @Gilou85000,

Thank you for your response,

Since the camera still isn't being detected, here are some advanced troubleshooting steps you can try.

Check Physical Connection

  • Disconnect and Reconnect: If your laptop has a removable battery, disconnect it, wait a few seconds, and then reconnect it. This can sometimes reset hardware connections.

Update BIOS

  • Download the Latest BIOS Update: Go to the HP support website, search for your laptop model, and check if there's a BIOS update available. Follow the instructions to update your BIOS, as newer versions may have fixes for hardware issues.

Perform a Clean Boot

  • Disable Startup Programs:
    1. Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and hit Enter.
    2. In the System Configuration window, go to the Services tab.
    3. Check the box for Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all.
    4. Go to the Startup tab and click Open Task Manager.
    5. Disable all startup items, then close Task Manager.
    6. Click OK and restart your computer.
  • This helps rule out software conflicts that may be causing the camera to not be detected.

Use HP Support Assistant

  • Run Diagnostics: If you have HP Support Assistant installed, use it to run a diagnostic check for hardware issues. It can sometimes identify problems with the camera or drivers.

Check Device Settings in Registry

  • Modify Registry Settings:
    1. Press Windows + R, type regedit, and hit Enter.
    2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DeviceAccess\Global.
    3. Look for a key related to the camera (like “{GUID}” for your camera) and check if the value is set to 0 (not allowed) or 1 (allowed). Adjust accordingly.
    4. Note: Be careful when modifying the registry. It's best to back it up before making any changes.

Check for Conflicting Software

  • Third-Party Software: If you have any third-party camera software or video conferencing apps (like Zoom, Skype, etc.), try uninstalling or disabling them temporarily to see if they are causing conflicts.

Use the HP Camera App

  • Try a Different App: Sometimes the default camera app might have issues. Try downloading a different camera application from the Microsoft Store to see if it recognizes the camera.

Restore System

  • System Restore: If the camera was working before, consider performing a system restore to a point when it was functioning correctly.

Reinstall Windows

  • As a Last Resort: If all else fails and you still cannot get the camera to work, consider reinstalling Windows. Make sure to back up your data before proceeding.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
