No sound and incorrect video settings when I connect HP laptop to TV via HDMI

I  will preface this by saying that I've already tried this with a different HDMI cable and on two other laptops (one an Asus and another a Lenovo), and those two laptops had absolutely no problems with sound or picture when connected to the TV by an HDMI cable. I tested this with different HDMI cables, updating drivers and checking settings, but the only laptop giving me trouble has been the HP one. As far as I'm concerned, it's a fault with the laptop and not anything else, otherwise the other two laptops, cables or TV would all be faulty. Also, I'm not sure what type of HDMI cable it is. I can only assume it is standard. Nobody online where I've looked has answers that specifically fit my problem, so it's time to ask here.

My HP laptop has WIndows 11 installed, updated to the latest version. When using the HDMI cable to connect to the TV, I made sure to restart my laptop to establish a proper connection, as well as turn on and off my TV. The connection did work, but there was no sound, and the laptop kept telling me in sound settings that the TV speakers were not connected (what happened with the Lenovo and Asus laptops was that the sound automatically switches from laptop speakers to TV speakers when connected by HDMI). I found absolutely no way of changing the settings for sound for my HP laptop to redirect the sound through the TV speakers.

Now on to the picture itself. My laptop usually has a resolution of 1920x1080. When connected to the TV (and I made sure to go into display settings to set up multiple displays, check the zoom, resolution etc.), the settings for the TV as display 2 showed a resolution of 640x400, with the change resolution setting greyed out. Again, I went through problems on the internet with no solution that fit my problem. I fiddled a bit with the display settings, but the resolution didn't change. The screen before was so zoomed in that I could see barely half the webpage on my TV; after fiddling a bit, the TV ended up showing a pixelated screen that looked like widescreen (the big black bars above and below).

Again, none of this happened with the Lenovo or Asus laptops. The Lenovo has Windows 10 and the Asus has Windows 11. Which, as I mentioned before, tells me it's not a problem of Windows 10/11, the HDMI cable, the drivers, the TV etc. It is a fault of the HP laptop...and I really don't understand why it's doing this.

Appreciate any help with this. If you have fitting advice for this, please explain very clearly (as I am not a technical wizard) and confirm if it is an HP hardware error. Thank you in advance.

Thank you so much for responding quickly and so thoroughly. I really appreciate it.

Just to make sure I wasn't missing anything, I went through all of the steps you offered to see if that fixed anything, but unfortunately there has been no change. I did try and find a BIOS to update the HP laptop, starting with going through the drivers and trying to update it. It told me I had the latest drivers available. I went through the HP site for an updated BIOS I could manually apply, but the drop-down list showed nothing available.

I'm not sure what the reason is for this and whilst I have other laptops I can use, this whole problem is frustrating and confusing. I have a horrible feeling that I just have a faulty laptop.

I'm not sure what else I can do about this. Do you have further advice?
