HP 15.6 inch Laptop PC 15-d4000 (4C802AV)

The "system tray" or "notification area" on Windows operating systems that provides quick access to various system settings and notifications, including network, Bluetooth, airplane mode, brightness, and sound level settings keeps popping up on its own.

Hi @deanbar,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing an issue with the system tray popping up unexpectedly on your HP laptop. Here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot and resolve this issue.

  • Restart Your Laptop: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve software glitches or temporary issues.
  • Check for Malware: Run a full antivirus scan to check for any malware or viruses that might be causing unwanted behavior on your system.
  • Update Drivers: Ensure that all drivers, especially graphics and chipset drivers, are up to date. Outdated drivers can sometimes cause unexpected behavior.
  • Check for Software Conflicts: Sometimes, third-party software can interfere with the system tray. Try booting your laptop into Safe Mode to see if the issue persists. If the problem doesn't occur in Safe Mode, it's likely caused by third-party software. You can then try disabling startup programs and services to identify the culprit.
  • System File Checker: Run the System File Checker tool to scan for and repair corrupted system files. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and type the command "sfc /scannow" (without quotes), then press Enter.
  • Check for Windows Updates: Make sure your Windows operating system is up to date. Sometimes, Microsoft releases updates to fix bugs and improve system stability.
  • Restore System Settings: If the issue started recently and you made changes to your system settings, you can try restoring your system to a previous restore point using the System Restore feature.
  • Hardware Check: In some cases, hardware issues such as a faulty keyboard or touchpad can cause unexpected behavior. Try disconnecting external peripherals one by one to see if any of them are causing the problem.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

DISABLE the TOUCHSCREEN (in Device Manager)! Thank you for your suggestions but none of them helped. I took my computer to an HP Service Center in Bangkok. The HP staff informed me that there may be a problem with the screen itself and that, if I needed to replace it, it would cost 10,000 baht - 275 USD. I told them that was not an option for me. The HP Service Center offered to reinstall Windows to see if that would resolve the issue. Unfortunately, it did not work after waiting for several hours for them to complete the installation.

After I got Windows up and running with Google Chrome installed, another technician I had not seen earlier then recommended 'disabling the touch screen'. I followed his suggestion and, so far, that has resolved the issue. Of course, I asked why nobody decided to offer that solution in the first place! I am writing this to inform others that 'disabling the touchscreen' just might be the fix they need when there is a problem with the Action Center continuously popping up automatically.
