Several months ago the keyboard back lights on my Omen 15 Lap no longer will turn off. So they are always on when the laptop is turned on. I have tried:
- The Fn+F4: will not turn off the keyboard lights or change the intensity.
- I saw a thread that said to modify the registry. I looked in the Registry: I could not find a command for the keyboard lights
- Of course, the laptop rebooted.
- All Win11 software is up to date.
- Upgraded from Win10 to Win11 (this was after the keyboard lights wouldn’t turn off). The laptop was originally purchased with Win10.
- One thread said to use the Omen Gaming Hub to turn on/off the lights: Tried that. Nope, not for the laptop keyboard lights.
- One thread said to download the Omen Control Software and a link was provided. Unfortunately the only available OS that can be selected is Win10 from the HP Downloads page for my laptop. Win11 is not listed, thus I could not proceed further. I get sent to the “My operating system is not listed on HP Software and Driver Downloads”. This is essentially a dead end. So I asked the HP Virtual Assistant who gave me a link for the Omen Control Software, but it is a broken link. https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04492013
- Thinking that maybe my F4 key was defective, I used the Windows Virtual Keyboard to select Fn+F4. No joy.
Any thoughts on this issue?

Hi @Larry96701,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you’ve tried a lot of the usual troubleshooting steps for dealing with persistent keyboard backlight issues. Here are a few additional things you can try.
Check BIOS Settings:
Sometimes, keyboard lighting settings are managed through the BIOS. Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing Esc, F2, or F10 during startup). Look for any options related to the keyboard backlight or RGB settings and see if you can adjust them there.
Update or Reinstall HP Omen Command Center:
Even though the Omen Command Center might not have worked initially, try updating or reinstalling it. Sometimes, a fresh install can resolve issues. You can download it from the HP Support website if it’s available.
Check for Windows Updates:
Make sure your Windows 11 installation is fully up to date. Sometimes, additional updates or patches can fix hardware-related issues.
Try a System Restore:
If this issue started after an update or change, you might want to try rolling back to a previous restore point when the keyboard lighting was working as expected. To do this, search for “System Restore” in the Start menu and follow the instructions.
Use HP Support Assistant:
HP Support Assistant might offer additional diagnostics and support options. Check if it can detect and resolve any issues with your laptop’s hardware or software.
Reinstall or Update Keyboard Drivers:
Go to Device Manager (Win + X > Device Manager) and locate the keyboard device under "Keyboards". Try updating the driver or uninstalling and reinstalling it.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
