Hi @p130 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're seeing a black horizontal line on the top of your laptop screen, there could be a few reasons for this issue.

Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot and potentially fix the problem:

  • Check for Software Issues: Sometimes, software glitches or driver issues can cause display problems. Try updating your graphics drivers to the latest version. You can do this by going to the Device Manager, finding your graphics card under Display Adapters, right-clicking on it, and selecting "Update driver."  Software and Drivers for HP Notebook - 15-r249tu
  • Run Display Troubleshooter: Windows 10 has a built-in display troubleshooter that can help diagnose and fix display problems. You can access it by going to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Display.
  • Check for Physical Damage: Inspect your laptop screen closely to see if there's any physical damage, such as cracks or pressure marks, that could be causing the black line. If you find any physical damage.
  • Adjust Screen Resolution and Refresh Rate: Sometimes, mismatched screen resolutions or refresh rates can cause display issues. Try adjusting these settings to see if it makes a difference. Right-click on your desktop, select Display settings, and try changing the resolution and refresh rate to see if the black line disappears.
  • Test with an External Monitor: Connect your laptop to an external monitor and see if the black line appears on the external display as well. If it doesn't, the issue may be with your laptop screen specifically.
  • Check for Loose Connections: Open up your laptop and check for any loose connections between the display panel and the motherboard. If you're not comfortable doing this yourself, it's best to take your laptop to a professional technician.
  • Reset or Reinstall Windows: As a last resort, you can try resetting or reinstalling Windows to see if it resolves the issue. Make sure to back up your important files before performing a reset or reinstall.
