Troubleshooting black screen issues on HP Notebooks: Click here to view the instructions!
HP Recommended

Hi, no idea what is happening with my laptop but just after warranty passed I've started having problems with my Pavilion Aero 13 (AMD 5600U)

I'm getting black screen or complete freeze when trying to start a video call or a youtube video. Looks like an issue related to graphics / video playback.

There are multiple errors in event logs like:

KERNEL SECURITY CHECK Failure

DRIVER POWER STATE Failure

I'm running WIN11 25H2 with all latest updates/drivers installed via windows update.

What I've tried already:

- Complete system reset, clean Windows 11 installation.

- Updated chipset drivers through AMD Adrenalin

- System File Checker (SFC) and DISM (no issues detected)

- Tested memory with MemTest86 and disk with chkdsk (no issues detected)

- Disabled Fast Startup

- Switched off hardware acceleration in the browser

None of those steps resolved the issue =(

Would be glad for any support to find a solution.

Thank you,

Hi @Shivver,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your laptop freezes or crashes during video-related tasks. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

   a. Check AMD Graphics Driver Version (Rollback or Clean Install)
     • Even if updated, the latest AMD driver may be unstable with hardware.
     • Download AMD Adrenalin Installer → choose Factory Reset / Clean Install.
     • If issue persists, rollback to a previous stable version (2023 or early 2024 drivers).

   b. Disable Automatic Driver Updates (Temporary)
     • Go to Control Panel → System → Advanced System Settings → Hardware → Device Installation Settings → No.
     • Prevents Windows Update from overwriting stable drivers.

   c. Update BIOS & Firmware
     • Go to HP Support website → search your exact Pavilion Aero 13 model.
     • Install the latest BIOS and firmware updates.
     • Make sure the laptop is plugged into power during update.

   d. Check Power Settings for GPU & CPU
     • Go to Control Panel → Power Options → Change plan settings → Advanced.
     • Set Processor power management → Minimum processor state = 5% (on battery), 100% (plugged in).
     • Set PCI Express → Link State Power Management → Off.
     • In AMD Adrenalin → enable Prefer maximum performance.

   e. Update Audio and Camera Drivers
     • In Device Manager → Sound, Video, and Game Controllers, right-click each audio device → Update driver.
     • Do the same for the camera driver under Imaging Devices.
     • Outdated audio/video drivers during video calls can trigger system freeze.

I hope this helps.

Hi @Shivver,

I appreciate you taking the time to follow all the steps. 😊 Please do monitor the system for a few days, intermittent GPU or driver-related issues sometimes take a bit of usage to confirm stability.

We’ll keep this thread open for your feedback. Once you’ve tested it for about a week, kindly let us know if the issue reappears or if everything runs smoothly so we can proceed accordingly.
