Hi
So just to be very clear, I am not looking to put my Laptop in SLEEP but I just want to TURN THE DISPLAY OFF - AT MY WILL
Before you guys start advising on going to Power Option etc and change settings for SLEEP mode, please resist
I thought HP was a good and smart company so I switched from Lenovo to HP thinking of better experience, but having gone through the trouble of finding ANY solution to just SWITCH DISPLAY OFF is not available.
Does HP not have any Utility or can their Developers make any small functionality to put this feature in?
This -> SCREEN OFF feature is a must for majority of the users, if you want the reasons why do we need it, then I can give multiple ones.
So, please do advise if there are already any utility to do this or any other way I can achieve this, would be helpful.
Thanks

Hi @jdwis,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand that you're looking for a way to turn off the display on your HP Pavilion laptop without putting the system to sleep. Unfortunately, there isn't a built-in HP utility specifically for this, but there are a few ways to achieve this functionality using system tweaks or third-party utilities.
Here are some methods you can try:
1.Use a Keyboard Shortcut
Windows + P: Press Windows + P and select "Second screen only." If no second screen is connected, this will turn off the display while keeping the laptop running. To turn the screen back on, just press any key or move the mouse.
2.Custom Power Plan Settings
Although you requested not to change sleep settings, it's worth mentioning that you can adjust power settings in the Control Panel to turn off the display after a certain period without sleeping the system.
Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose when to turn off the display.
Set the Turn off the display option to a preferred time, while keeping Put the computer to sleep to Never.
3.Create a Display Off Shortcut Using Script
You can create a simple shortcut to turn off your display:
Right-click on your desktop and choose New > Shortcut.
In the location field, type the following command: C:\Windows\System32\DisplaySwitch.exe /monitoroff
Name the shortcut something like "Turn Off Display."
Now, whenever you double-click this shortcut, it will turn off the screen.
4. Using Windows PowerToys
Windows PowerToys has a feature called "Awake" that can help keep the system awake while allowing you to manually turn off the display using methods like Windows + P.
These options should give you flexibility in turning off your display without putting your HP Pavilion laptop to sleep.
Refer to this document: HP Pavilion 16 inch Laptop PC 16-af0000 User Manual
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Gaya1239
Thanks for taking time to look into this and replying my query.
Your 1st point -
>> 1.Use a Keyboard Shortcut <<
# I am not using Secondary screen, just the laptop screen.
Using Windows + P brings Projection menu which is of no use as there is no option to OFF LAPTOP DISPLAY
4 Options there
1 - PC screen only - clicking on it doesnt work, I believe the Projection it self is on PC screen - so not going to swtich off display
2 - Duplicate - no use as no secondary screen attached
3 - Extend - no use as no secondary screen attached
4 - Second screen only - no use as no secondary screen attached
your 2nd point -
>> 2.Custom Power Plan Settings <<
And you mentioned --
"it's worth mentioning that you can adjust power settings in the Control Panel to turn off the display after a certain period without sleeping the system."
# Again, I want to switch off my display as and when I want it, not on timer (as mentioned in original post)
your 3rd point -
>> 3.Create a Display Off Shortcut Using Script <<
You can create a simple shortcut to turn off your display: Right-click on your desktop and choose New > Shortcut.
In the location field, type the following command: C:\Windows\System32\DisplaySwitch.exe /monitoroff
# Tried runing this command and it brings up the same menu as Windows + P --> for projection - so no use
your 4th point -
>> 4. Using Windows PowerToys <<
# There is no "PowerToys" utility/program on my Laptop
My Laptop is Pavilion 16-af0004na with Win-11 23H2 (Ultra 5 series)
You also provided a link for software/driver/utilities etc
I checked that link when I received this laptop (more than 2 weeks back) and could not find any Power related programs, I checked it again today and still could not find any including "PowerToys"
Sorry but this is not the solution.
