Pavilion dv6-6190US
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Has anyone updated their dv6 laptop to the current PS/2 Port Touchpad driver (v17.0.17C)  from Synaptics site? The last driver offered on HP's site for Windows 7(64) is 15.3.11, which I am using. I do not know enough about HP's practices about modifying stock drivers for its notebooksto know whether this is a safe update.

Thanks

Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Support Forums. 🙂 I came across your post and would like to help.

I understand that you have an HP Pavilion dv6-6690US laptop and would like to know if it is safe to perform drivers update on current PS/2 Port Touchpad driver (v17.0.17C)  from Synaptics site.

I suggest you to hold on and not perform the update from a third party website unless it is rolled out by HP. However, I would still like to know if you're facing any issues with the touchpad due to which you would like to perform a driver update?

Also, I'm unable to locate the product specifications for HP Pavilion dv6-6690US laptop. Please let me know the exact product model no. This link will help you to find the model no: http://hp.care/2bygf7l

Feel free to reply. Cheers! 🙂

Sorry. Model number should have read dv6-6190US. Product number is LW223UA#ABA.

Thanks for responding.

All the driver/FW downloads for this model seem to be restricted to 8 or 9 months in 2011.  Some may only be the original release. It doesn't appear that HP provided updates for very long.

The Touchpad has always registered touches when I didn't know I touched it, and has not registered touches that I intended. I have PalmCheck set at 9. I was hoping to find a more current driver with better controls.

I realize that you are veyr limited in what you can say as an HP employee. Do you know of any instances where the Synaptics site driver worked with this notebook? Do you know of any instances where the Synaptics site driver did NOT work with this notebook?

Does anyone else reading this thread have any experience in this area with the Synaptic updates?

You're welcome and thanks for replying with the detailed information. 🙂

The updates are rolled out by HP only when there is an issue detected with the part or with the existing drivers.

Let us run a hardware test on the touchpad to ensure that the hardware is fine:

  • Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

  • Turn on the computer and immediately press the F2 key repeatedly, about once every second.

  • The HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu is displayed.

HP PC Hardware Diagnostic UEFI screen

  • Select component tests.

List of the Component tests

  • Please initiate a test on the Mouse/Touchpad - There are 2 mouse tests to determine if the mouse is functioning correctly - the Pointer Test and the Drag and Drop Test. Click Mouse/Touchpad, then select the test you want to run and follow the instructions.

NOTE: If your HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI is different than the version used here, you can upgrade it to the latest version. For the latest UEFI software version and installation instructions, go to the HP Hardware Diagnostics UEFI website.

If the test passes then I suggest you to follow this HP document for using and configuring the touchpad.

Hope this does the trick. Cheers!
