So, every once in a while, my computer's screen will start turning pink. Light bars will appear and all the color will slowly fade to a pink or white color. I've spoken to several knowledgeable friends and their consensus is that it's probably an issue with my graphics card.
The last person I spoke with was fairly confident about that until I told them that sometimes moving the laptop itself (lifting it up by the base) can trigger the issue happening, and that often times I can just move the screen itself in different directions and for whatever reason, once I find the exact right angle, that "fixes" the issue temporarily. I don't know what that's all about or if it's even my graphics card that's the issue to begin with.
I have an HP laptop with touchscreen refurbished that I bought only a few months ago from Walmart; the warranty just expired before I saw this problem, annoyingly enough. (It's been going on for a few weeks).
I have no idea what to do. It's my understanding that graphics cards on laptops can't really be replaced because they're attached to the motherboard, and I'm going to assume mine is the same.
If anyone has a solution that won't result in me having to blow hundreds of dollars on a new laptop soon or if they have an alternate theory as to what the issue is, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.

Hi @RyanD97,
Good Day. Thanks for posting your query in the HP community. I read the post regarding the computer screen turning pink randomly at times. It will be a pleasure to assist you here.
Commendable diagnosis, superb troubleshooting and splendid description of the issue before posting. Hats off you on that score. 🙂
I would require more information regarding this to assist you better.
- Have you checked if this happens in the bios or an external screen?
- Did you update the graphics card drivers and the bios?
- Please help me with the exact model# of the printer.
It looks like a display cable issue more than the graphics card as the computer because when you move it back and forth at specific angles it seems to work fine.
For a start please check if this happens in the bios also, by leaving the computer in the bios for a very long time.
Steps to go to bios:
- To do this, please keep tapping the Esc key gently several times as soon as you power on the computer.
- It takes you to the startup menu.
- Then press the F10 key to go the bios.
- Then check if the display turns pink on this page by leaving it under observation for a long time.
- Also move the lid back and forth to further isolate the issue.
- We are checking outside of the operating system here.
- If it does not happen here then press F9 key to load setup defaults and select yes and push “enter.”
- Then press F10 to save changes and exit and check if it still boots to the screen that you described.
If it does not happen in the bios, then please perform these steps:
- Following these steps:
- Right-Click on start button> click device manager> expand display adapters>then select the display drivers that are listed and right-click on it and uninstall the drivers.
- Check the box that states delete the software for this device.
- Then restart the computer and update the bios chipset and graphic drivers from this link: http://hp.com/drivers and update the bios, chipset and display drivers
If it happens in the bios also, then the display is faulty and needs to be replaced by contacting Hp phone support via this link: www.hp.com/contacthp/ please select the country and follow the on-screen instructions. They will be happy to assist you immediately.
If the unit is under warranty, the manufacturer’s warranty should take care of it for you.
Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great.
To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.
Take care now and have a splendid week ahead.
