HP Elitebook 8460P
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I let an HP Elitebook 8460P basically run non-stop as a desktop for about a year & a half. Sometimes I used it as a rendering machine so I know that makes the CPU and GPU get hot although I never got a single shutoff of the computer by the CPU or motherboard because of excessive heat. It has an Intel i5-2520 CPU and uses the integrated GPU with no discrete GPU at all.

Recently I bought a used HP Elitebook 8470P and I turned off the HP 8460P for a few days. Now when I turn it on the fan, indicator lights, and DVD run for about 4 seconds with no video and the computer cuts back off. It isn't a battery or power supply problem. I think that when the computer cooled completely down a solder somewhere broke and now the computer doesn't work, but I'm not sure that is what has happened.

The computer is otherwise in good shape. What can I do to fix it outside of this 'reflow' solution I read of? Will replacing the CPU likely fix it? I think an old i5-2520 probably could be bought cheap on eBay but I don't want to waste money on it if that's not going to fix it.

I guess I will start scheduling overnight shutdowns for my replacement HP 8470P laptop to avoid the same problem recurring.

Thanks

I haven't replaced the thermal grease or compressed air cleaned it no, but I have done the other things already.

I will reapply thermal paste when I upgrade the i5 CPU with 2 cores in my HP 8470P to an i7 with 4 cores as I don't want to waste the thermal grease as at $3.29 and a hassle to order and wait I don't want to use it all or have it dry out as it's not a very big syringe.  If that doesn't work I will buy a used CPU on eBay. Means I need to get 3 doses of thermal grease out of that syringe. :indifferent:

I clean installed Windows 10 on a 100 GB used HD  before I turned it off for a week so I'm pretty sure your suggestions or a replacement CPU will work.

Thanks.

Wow, OK. I may need help if I goof up when I switch out the CPUs. I don't intend to do as near as heavy rendering nearly so often with it and I've already configured it to go to sleep after a while of non-use to try and avoid what happen to the HP 8460P.

Thanks very much.

If you live in the  US  I could have offered a unit for free. "You pay shipping"

I have thousands of laptops to pick from.

If we can help in the future let me know.

I do live in the US. I'll be glad to pay shipping to have a laptop I can use just for rendering while I use the one I just bought for everything else.

Should I PM you in this forum? I live in Kentucky actually.

I need you to go here.

https://h20574.www2.hp.com/Default.htm?app=psml-gcsnhpi

Click on Laptops and Hybrids then HP EliteBook Notebook PC's.

Then scroll down to HP EliteBook 8560w Mobile Workstation.

This is the type I was looking for.

Work Stations, most of the time will have 4 memory slots.

4x4=16GB   and some   4x8=32GB

I tested a few that had M.2 SSD slots also.

Some worked but they had dings, rub marks, bad displays just not what i wanted.

Then around noon the warehouse manager informed me that everything had been tested.

We have our first shipping container going out next Tuesday since Hurricane Irma hit us.

I think a Mobil WorkStation is best.
