connecting to 34" ultrawide monitor but window does not expand the entire width on the monitor.  on the monitor, there's about 5" of black unusable space about the size of a 26" monitor.

This is most likely a driver issue.  So, is the monitor running in 4K mode?  If so, that can be an issue because only the most recent Win10 video drivers can handle 4K properly.

would you know whether win10 video driver can be used with elitebook 840?

Since you're using an external monitor with your laptop, it could very well be that the laptop itself is not designed to handle 4K displays, which is why I asked about that.  If you force the install of other video drivers solely to address that, you risk corrupting the built-in screen display and you don't want to do that.

would you be able to recommend an ultrawide 34" that could work with  my elitebook?
