HP Spectre x360 i7 processor
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am trying to connect an external monitor to my new HP Spectre to any of the two USB C thunderbolt ports on the side via an HDMI adaptor.  On plugging in, after about 3 seconds I get an error message that the USB device connected to this computer malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it.

I took the computer back to the HP Shop from which I bought this computer.  They asked me to run windows update and the HP software updates. I have done so, and I still have the problem.

What can I do to resolve this problem?

Which adapter are you using? Spectre can be finicky about the brand. @old_geekster has a Spectre and has used usb-c hdmi adapter. Maybe he will pop in.

@trorke

I don't know what is your Spectre. My loaner is an HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15-bl1xx machine with the following ports at its right

I've got the following adapter

   https://www.startech.com/au/Cards-Adapters/USB-3.0/Hubs/3-port-usb-3-hub~HB30C3A1GE

which worked perfectly (USB 3.0 ports & NIC) on my old loaner which was an HP Elitebook 1030 G2. But on the new Spectre it won't work now on BOTH ports 4 and 6.

Actually NIC is ok but USB 3.0 ports won't work properly with USB flash drives, USB card reader. One day it is ok but fails the next.

I don't have USB-C to HDMI cable to test HDMI now, I may test later because it has HDMI port (3) ann I am happy to use it for external monitor right now. I will also plan to test this HDMI port with a 4K TV on a free weekend (when my grand kids won't come to play with me).

Regards.

Hi Thanks.  I am using a Hama  (00135726) USB-C to HDMI.  We tested the unit on other HP laptops at the shop and it worked fine.

This computer of mine is an HP Spectre x360 with an i7 gen 8 micro, 16 GB Ram, 1TB SSD.  It is the unit with the two USB-C  ports om the right hand side alongside the fingerprint reader.

Thank you for your reply.  The port configuration you show in your picture matches my PC.

I look forward to hearing what your experience is with USB-C to HDMI.  I tested this USB-C to HDMI adaptor on other computers (Not this particular model of mine) and it worked without any problems.

Hi Provost

It looks like you were right.  I bought another product brand (VCOM USB-C to multi port adaptor - CU427M) and it works!!

Thanks for your help
