HP Pavillion Notebook
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

One day there was a small purple mark on my HP Pavillion screen. After a while it got worse and it multiplied. They get even worse when I press on them. They are on both the inside and outside. They make the display glitchy and messed up.  I can't see anything. Note that the screen is actually coming away a little at the sides. If I push on the screen, the bottom right hand corner clears up, but when I let go it glitches again. I am using an old HP w2207h moniter for now, but it does not work too good.

TIA.

@computer_comput,

Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums.  After reading your post I see that you need assistance regarding issues with the computer’s display. It will be a delight to assist you here.

Superb analysis and brilliant diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you on that score. 🙂

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this:

  • Did this happen after a power outage or surge?
  • Was the notebook accidentally dropped or any liquid spilled on it?

For now, try these steps:

Please check in the bios if the display is messed up:

  • Please go to the bios page and load bios defaults.
  • To do this, please keep tapping the Esc key gently several times as soon as you power on the computer.
  • It takes you to the startup menu.
  • Then press the F10 key to go the bios.
  • Check if the display has these purple marks?
  • Then press F9  to load setup defaults and select yes and push “enter.”
  • Then press F10 to save changes and exit and check if it still boots to the screen that you described.

If the issue is present in the bios, then it is a hardware issue with the display of the computer that might be broken inside and may require a replacement or the display cables.

Please check this link: http://hp.care/2EtdL6I  (HP Notebook PCs - Diagnosing a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) for Damage) for further assistance in this regard.

If the issue persists, please contact Hp phone support to get the computer serviced.

HP Technical Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: http://hp.care/2r9wSvP

  • Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.
  • Next, choose the 'Contact Support' tab at the top and scroll down to the bottom of the 'HP Support- Contact' page to fill out the form provided with your contact information.
  • Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.
  • Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

They will be happy to assist you immediately.

If the unit is under warranty, the manufacturer’s warranty should take care of it for you.

If the computer’s display is broken and there is physical damage then there might be a charge for repairing the computer. I am being honest about it without beating around the bush.

Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. Going by your technical expertise and competence I am sure you will be able to perform these steps without breaking a sweat.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as Accepted Solution as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Thank you! I just have three questions.

  • Can I perform this procedure on my moniter?
  • Do I do this after shutting down?
  • Do I put my password in first?

Thanks!

@computer_comput,

I read the quick post. It is great to have you back and your time and efforts are greatly appreciated. You've displayed commendable patience, terrific temperament and great technical skills to try and resolve the issue. Kudos to you for that. 🙂

1. You cannot do it on an external monitor.

2. You cannot do it with the computer shut down.

3. You need to do it before entering your password.

Simply follow the instructions from my previous post. Before that do the hard reset from this link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01684768 then  follow these steps only:

  • Please go to the bios page and load bios defaults.

I do apologize, I don't think I was clear on this: The purple marks are on the display. Many of them are connected, and in the middle of them is just a white "background" and thin, colorful lines. There are a few areas that have the colorful lines making up square of different sizes. One set of the squares are gray, the other set is white. There is slight flashing on the lines.

Again, I apologize for my wording. Thank you.

@computer_comput,

I read and reviewed the post. Thanks for responding. I understand clearly that the display has a problem.

Are you able to see anything at all on the screen?

Is the display covered completely by these multicolored lines and boxes?

To assist you correctly please share a screenshot or an image of the screen using your smartphone and we will be able to guide you correctly.
