Hello, I bought a used HP Spectre x360 Convertible Laptop PC 15-eb1000 (3N391AV), and it came with an HP Rechargeable MPP2.0 Tilt Pen. The pen would not respond to a charge when plugged into the supplied USBC cable. I tried a different cable, and still no response. Finally, on the third USB to USBC cable, plugged into the laptop USB port and into the pen, it responded with a quick .5-second flash of orange, and then it went to solid white. I let it charge for several hours and unplugged the pen, and it did not work on the screen. I plugged it back in, and the same thing: a flash of orange, then solid white. While plugged in, I tried the pen, and it worked! Unfortunately, the only way the pen will work is when it is plugged in. What would you recommend for me to be able to use the pen while unplugged? Thanks!

Hi @JamoDenver, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:
Reset the Pen
Try resetting the pen by pressing and holding both the eraser button and the barrel button (side button) simultaneously for about 7-10 seconds. Then, unplug it and test if it works.
Check for Firmware Updates
Since your HP Spectre x360 supports HP MPP pens, check for any firmware updates:
- Go to HP Support Assistant or HP's website
- Search for HP Pen Control software
- Install any updates available for your laptop and pen.
Verify Battery Status
If your laptop has HP Pen Control or Windows Bluetooth settings:
- Go to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Pens & Windows Ink
- Check if the pen’s battery level is displayed.
If the battery is at 0% and not charging, the internal battery might be defective.
Use a Different Power Source & Cable
Since only one of your cables allowed charging, try:
- A different charger (higher wattage USB-C charger, such as a phone or tablet charger)
- Different ports on the laptop or a USB-C hub
- A direct wall adapter instead of the laptop's USB ports
Hard Reset the Pen (If Possible)
Some MPP pens allow a hard reset by inserting a paperclip into a small reset hole (check near the charging port or under the clip, if available).
Test on Another Device
Try using the pen on another compatible Windows Ink device to confirm if the issue is with the pen or laptop.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hello, unfortunately, none of those solutions fixed my problem. The pen does not have an eraser button. The firmware is up to date. It is not Bluetooth-connected. I've tried multiple power sources. There is not a reset button.
Do you have any other suggestions? As mentioned, the pen is an MPP2.0 HP rechargeable pen.
