@Mari0327, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

If you're having trouble resetting the password to unlock your HP laptop screen, here are a few steps you can try depending on the type of account you're using:

If you're using a Microsoft Account to sign in:

Go to the Microsoft password reset page:
https://account.live.com/password/reset

Follow the on-screen instructions to reset your password.

Once reset, use the new password to unlock your laptop.

If you're using a local account (not connected to Microsoft):

Option 1: Use Password Hint

  • On the login screen, check if a password hint is available below the password box. This might help you remember it.

Option 2: Reset via Safe Mode (if hint doesn’t help)

This method works only if you have another admin account on the laptop.

  1. Restart your laptop and press F8 or Shift + F8 repeatedly before Windows loads.
  2. Choose Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
  3. In Command Prompt, type: net user <your username> <newpassword>
Replace <your username> with your account name and <newpassword> with the new password you want.

If you can't reset the password at all:

You may need to perform a System Recovery or Factory Reset. This will erase all data, so back up if possible.

Here’s how:

  1. Turn off the laptop.
  2. Turn it on and immediately press F11 repeatedly.
  3. Choose Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
  4. Follow the prompts to reset.
