Rotation Lock greyed out

HP Recommended
HP ENVY x360 15-ee0504sa
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I am trying to rotate the screen of my Envy, but I notice the Rotation Lock is greyed out. Software and Drivers are all updated. I also tried to go on portrait mode and back to the landscape but it is still grey out.

@BBAL1

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • Did this happen after a recent window or software update?
  • Did you make any changes to the settings of your PC prior to the issue?
  • When was the last time it worked fine?

While you respond to that, let's try these steps:

Hard Reset: Follow steps from the link: https://hp.care/2GnkMa8. (Refer to the removable and sealed battery)
BIOS default:(do not skip any troubleshooting steps even if you feel steps are repeating)

  1. Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
  2. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
  3. On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
  4. Press F10 to Save and Exit.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
  6. Follow the prompts to restart your computer.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Thanks for replying. Meanwhile, I fixed (not sure how) my issue.

The rotation problem happened after Windows update. I did restart the laptop but still the same issue.

After 3 days, I tried to turn the laptop in the vertical position and it turned. Now everything seems ok.

I too have the same issue on my 13" HP Envy. I have tried all that you suggested (also tried the OP's change the screen rotation manually thing), nothing has worked.

I believe this issue started after the recent BIOS update I was prompted to do. Is there a way to revert the BIOS update to the previous version?

When did it last work? That's a difficult question to answer for something such as "rotation lock". I know the screen rotated last week, as I demonstrated that function to my kid. But, I can't tell you if this issue cropped up late last week, or over the weekend, or just two days ago when I actually noticed it was selected in the quick actions menu, and I couldn't deselect it, nor could I deselect it in settings.

The one thing I DO know is that there has been a BIOS update, as well as a Windows update within the last week. Common sense says it would most likely be related to one of those two things.

Thank you for posting back.

I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue. I would suggest performing system factory reset will put the computer back to the original factory settings in this way all corrupted and outdated software will be removed.

While doing the recovery there is an option to backup your personal files. If you have not previously done one now is a good time.

Restoring Files that were Backed Up Using HP Recovery Manager (Windows )You can also contact HP support for assistance. They can remotely access your system to help alleviate difficulties: www.hp.com/contacthp/

The HP Cloud Recovery Tool allows you to download recovery software to a USB drive. You can use the downloaded recovery image file in order to install the Windows operating system.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

That's the best solution? A factory reset? I could've jumped to that without bothering to seek support....was kind of hoping there'd be something else we could do....like undo some recent updates.

OK...I did the full reset. Wiped out everything and started fresh (all my files are in the cloud anyway).

Rotation now works....HOWEVER, it is still greyed out, and appears as locked.
