Troubleshooting black screen issues on HP Notebooks: Click here to view the instructions!
HP Recommended

I was using my laptop, and suddenly my screen got discoloration lines on it. I first took a screenshot to check if its some software issues, but the screenshot was fine. Then I did some system tests like the BIOS and all, everything was fine. But this issue is still unknown. I even tried restarting again and again my laptop.

This screen is a fixed glitch, and I am really worried about this. Darker images are not clear, and lighter images are still somewhat clear on it.

Hi @SiddharthChab,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP laptop's screen is displaying discoloration or lines but the screenshot appears normal, this typically indicates a hardware issue with the display or the connection to it rather than a software problem. Here are some steps you can take to diagnose and possibly resolve the issue.

Check Display Connections:

  • Ensure the display cable (if accessible) is securely connected. This generally requires opening the laptop casing, so it’s recommended only if you are comfortable doing so or if you consult with a professional.

External Display Test:

  • Connect your laptop to an external monitor using an HDMI or VGA cable. If the external display works correctly, the issue is likely with the laptop’s display panel itself.

Update Graphics Drivers:

  • Update your graphics drivers through the Device Manager.
  • Right-click on the Windows Start button and select Device Manager.
  • Find your display adapters, right-click, and choose "Update driver".

Check for Physical Damage:

  • Inspect the laptop screen for any visible cracks or damage.
  • Even if there’s no visible damage, the internal components might be affected.

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics:

  • You mentioned you ran some tests, but ensure you have also run the specific HP Hardware Diagnostics for video:
    • Turn off your laptop.
    • Turn it back on and immediately press ESC to enter the startup menu.
    • Select F2 for System Diagnostics, and look for the ‘Component Tests’ related to video and graphics.

Overheating Issues:

  • Overheating can sometimes cause visual artifacts; ensure the laptop is not overheating. Clean the fan vents and ensure proper ventilation during use.

These steps should help you diagnose whether the issue is display-specific and how to potentially resolve it.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
