Microsoft Windows 11

I have an HP Sprectre x360 and recently when I turn on my computer after shutting down, the display is black. For some reason when I press down on the bottom of the screen with my finger the screen turns on and shows my desk top, meaning that when I logged in with my finger print label it worked, just wasn’t displayed. So I believe the display is the problem because my laptop works, I just can’t see.

Also, sometimes the screen will go black even when I’m using it or watching something - meaning that it’s not an intended battery saving function but an issue

Hi @Renee179,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you might be dealing with a hardware issue, possibly related to the display connection or backlight. Here are a few steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem.

  • Check for Loose Connections: Sometimes, pressing on the screen can temporarily fix display issues, which might indicate a loose internal connection. If you're comfortable with it, you could open up the laptop (or have a professional do it) to check if the display cable is securely connected to the motherboard.
  • Update Graphics Drivers: Ensure that your graphics drivers are up to date. Sometimes display issues can be related to driver problems. You can update your drivers through Device Manager or by visiting the HP support website.
  • Adjust Brightness Settings: If you can see the display when pressing down, it might be a backlight issue. Check the brightness settings to make sure it's not set too low.
  • Test External Display: Connect your laptop to an external monitor to see if the issue is with the internal display only. If the external monitor works fine, it's likely an issue with the internal screen or its connections.
  • Perform a Hard Reset: Power off the laptop completely, then hold down the power button for 15-30 seconds before turning it back on. This can sometimes resolve display issues.
  • Check BIOS Settings: Sometimes, display settings in the BIOS can affect how the screen functions. Access the BIOS settings (usually by pressing F2 or Esc during startup) and check if there are any display-related options that might need adjustment.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
