Troubleshooting black screen issues on HP Notebooks: Click here to view the instructions!

Victus by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-r0000 (76T08AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

While gaming (e.g., World of Tanks), the screen suddenly starts flickering, freezes briefly, and then goes completely black.

The laptop stays on, but the screen only returns after a few seconds or remains black until you restart.

The problem occurs:

only under load (gaming),

with or without an external monitor,

on battery power, but also when plugged in.

Hi @G_OnMerkur,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your Victus 16-r0000 is flickering, freezing, and going black during gaming. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Check graphics drivers
Update both Intel and NVIDIA drivers using HP Support Assistant or the NVIDIA GeForce Experience app.
Outdated or conflicting drivers often cause flickering or black-screen resets under load.

Verify Windows updates
Go to Settings > Windows Update and install all pending updates.
Stability patches often fix display-related issues in gaming scenarios.

Check NVIDIA GPU mode
Open NVIDIA Control Panel → Manage 3D settings → Global settings → select “High-performance NVIDIA processor.”
This prevents the system from switching between Intel and NVIDIA graphics mid-game.

Disable GPU Auto-Switching (if available)
In BIOS or HP Command Center, look for options like “Hybrid Graphics” or “Switchable Graphics.”
Temporarily set it to “Discrete GPU only” to rule out switching-related blackouts.

Monitor temperatures during gameplay
Use tools like HP OMEN Gaming Hub, HWMonitor, or MSI Afterburner.
If GPU/CPU temperatures spike above safe limits, thermal throttling can cause display dropouts.

Clean the air vents and check airflow
Blocked vents lead to overheating under load.
Ensure the laptop is placed on a hard, flat surface for proper cooling.

Test without the external monitor
Since the issue occurs with or without it, this confirms it’s not related to the HDMI/DP port.
Still, try one session with only the internal display to check for behavior differences.

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI)
Restart → press Esc → F2 → System Tests.
Run the “Extensive test” for the GPU, system board, and memory.

Try lowering in-game settings
Reduce resolution, disable DLSS/RT, or lower texture quality.
If the issue disappears, it points to a load-related GPU or power delivery issue.

Check power settings
In Windows: Control Panel → Power Options → set to “High performance.”
In NVIDIA Control Panel → Set power management mode to “Prefer maximum performance.”

Reseat the RAM (if comfortable)
Loose RAM can cause freezes or black screens during high load.
Reseat both sticks and test again.

Test with the laptop plugged directly to wall power
Avoid surge protectors or low-quality extension cords.
Voltage drops under load can trigger GPU resets.

I hope this helps.
