I have a model HP 17-g121wm that goes dark when power supply is unplugged, so dark I can barely see the screen.
Yes, I have looked at all display and screen settings, but it makes no difference. The battery is new and fully charged at 100%. I am using Windows 10 with a new SSD that I just installed.

@GIJOE3325, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Solving Screen Brightness Issues on HP 17-g121wm!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
When your HP 17-g121wm laptop screen gets significantly dark after unplugging the power supply, there are several aspects you can inspect or adjust:
1. Power Plan Settings
Windows 10 often reduces screen brightness to conserve battery life. Adjust the power plan settings as follows:
Open Settings:
- Press Windows + I to open the Settings.
Navigate to System:
- Click on System.
Power & Sleep:
- Select Power & sleep on the left sidebar.
Advanced Power Settings:
- Scroll down to the Related settings section and click on Additional power settings.
Change Plan Settings:
- Choose your active power plan and click Change plan settings.
Adjust Advanced Settings:
- Click Change advanced power settings.
Display Settings:
- Expand the Display section, then the Enable adaptive brightness section. Ensure it is set to Off for both On battery and Plugged in.
2. Battery Saver Mode
Windows 10 has a Battery Saver mode that automatically lowers screen brightness when activated.
Open Action Center:
- Click the notification icon at the bottom-right corner to open the Action Center.
Disable Battery Saver:
- Click on Battery saver to disable it if it's turned on.
Hope this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!
