I set the screen brightness to 80% which is a good brightness for me, day and night.  However, after a couple of days the screen light has dropped and when checked is around 50% ??  I keep resetting but this is a viscious circle and keeps reverting to 50 %ish.  Any ideas how I can set this to 80% and make it stay at 80% ??

Your replies will be greatly appreciated....

Hi @DavidNo5,

I understand your laptop’s screen brightness keeps dropping back to around 50% even after you set it to 80%. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Disable Adaptive Brightness

Windows often adjusts brightness automatically based on ambient light.

Go to Settings > System > Display > Brightness and turn off “Change brightness automatically when lighting changes.”

Check Power Plan Settings

Open Control Panel > Power Options.

For your active plan, click Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings.

Under Display > Enable adaptive brightness, set both “On battery” and “Plugged in” to Off.

Update Graphics Drivers

Outdated drivers can cause brightness resets.

Open Device Manager > Display adapters, right‑click your graphics card, and select Update driver.

Turn Off Battery Saver Mode

Battery Saver can reduce brightness automatically.

Go to Settings > System > Power & Battery and ensure Battery Saver is off.

Check HP Utility Software

Some HP laptops include utilities that override brightness settings.

Look for HP Power Manager or similar tools and disable auto‑adjust features.

Lock Brightness with Registry (Advanced)

If settings keep reverting, brightness can be locked via registry or group policy.

This ensures Windows won’t auto‑adjust, but should only be done if other steps fail.

Restart After Setting Brightness

After adjusting brightness, restart the laptop once.

This helps Windows save the new setting as default.

I hope this helps.
