Hi @Jasmineg2,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP laptop might be experiencing a hardware issue, possibly related to the display cable or the screen itself. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to see if you can resolve the issue.
Check Power Settings:
- Go to Settings > System > Display.
- Ensure that the Night Light setting is turned off.
- Check the Brightness slider and adjust it to see if it helps.
Keyboard Shortcuts:
- Try using the keyboard shortcuts to increase brightness (usually the Fn key + brightness increase key, often represented by a sun icon).
Update Graphics Drivers:
- Right-click on the Start menu and select Device Manager.
- Expand the Display adapters section, right-click on your graphics driver, and select Update driver.
External Monitor Test:
- Connect your laptop to an external monitor. If the external display works fine, the issue may be with the laptop screen or its connections.
Inspect Display Cable:
- If you feel comfortable doing so, check the hinges and the area around the screen for any visible damage or loose cables. Sometimes, a loose display cable can cause brightness issues when the screen is adjusted.
Reset the Laptop:
- Perform a hard reset by shutting down your laptop, unplugging it from the power source, and removing the battery (if removable). Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds, then reassemble and restart.
Check for Windows Updates:
- Ensure your operating system is up to date. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
