HP ENVY

The screen does not display any more when the computer is booted up. I'm on a wireless network, but I can't do anything because the screen does not boot. The computer is on, but the screen is not.

Hi@Rossemilie, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I reviewed your post and I understand it's not booting to Windows.

If you recently installed an additional hard drive, turn off the computer and remove the drive before using the following steps: (Click here for details)

Open HP System Recovery:

CAUTION:

Please backup your data before proceeding further:

Press the F11 key repeatedly while the computer is starting.

If you have a recovery disc, turn on the PC and insert the first recovery disc into the drive. Use the disc to enter the system recovery.

Select the Microsoft Startup Repair tool and wait for the repair to find and fix errors. When finished, restart the computer; even if the startup repair tool finds errors but cannot fix them.

If the error message persists, open the recovery manager screen as was done in step 1.

At the recovery manager screen, press ALT + D.

Enter the following text at the command prompt: bootrec /rebuildbcd

If bootrec displays "Add installation to boot list?", press y.

After bootrec completes successfully, the computer displays "The operation completed successfully".

To close the command prompt, enter the following text: exit

At the Recovery Manager screen, select the Microsoft Startup Repair tool (again) and wait for startup repair to find and fix errors. When finished, restart the computer.

The error should no longer open. If it does, perform a system recovery, making sure to back up important files.

If you removed a hard drive before using these steps, replace the drive. If the error occurs again, make sure the additional hard drive is not set as an active drive. Only the main bootable drive should be set as active.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Removing the battery, waiting a few minutes, then putting it back in and starting it up again seemed to work. But when leaving it on, then it goes to "sleep" it increasingly does the same thing. The screen does not go back on.

Hi@Rossemilie,

Please follow the below steps:

Step 1: Enabling the Keyboard in Windows

Skip this step if the computer does not enter sleep mode or if the computer wakes unexpectedly.

Follow these steps to enable your keyboard to wake your computer from sleep mode:

  1. In Windows, search for and open the Device Manager.

  2. Click the arrow next to Keyboards and double-click the name of your keyboard.

  3. If the Power Management tab is available, proceed to the next step.

If the Power Management tab is not available, click the Change Settings button if it appears below the Device status box. The same Keyboard Properties window opens with the Power Management tab available.

If you are prompted for an Administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

  1. Click the Power Management tab and make sure that the box next to Allow this device to wake the computer is checked.

  2. Click OK, and then test to make sure that the keyboard can now wake the computer. If the computer still cannot wake from sleep mode, continue using these steps.

  3. For instructions on how to update the BIOS of your computer, see one of the following HP support documents: Updating the BIOS (Notebooks)
