Screen goes Black. A small box appears in the upper left corner, with a few symbols inside, then the screen returns. Sometimes I have to right click and refresh. This happens most commonly when I exit the internet or when I am using the vertical scroll bar. It will lock up and the screen goes to black. This started after a recent update. the only change I noticed was the addition of a new icon, in the upper right corner next to the Favorites Icon, for the Edge Secure Network. Any guidance I receive would be greatly appreciated.

@Rotam7, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Based on your description, the issue with your HP Envy x360 16-ac0000 laptop, where the screen goes black and shows a small box with symbols seems to be related to a graphics driver glitch or display setting conflict, possibly triggered by a recent Windows or Edge Secure Network update.
Here are some steps to help resolve this:
Update Graphics Drivers
Outdated or corrupted graphics drivers can cause display issues.
- Visit the official HP driver page for your model:
HP Envy x360 16-ac0000 Drivers - Download and install the latest Intel or AMD graphics driver listed.
- Restart your laptop after installation.
Use HP Support Assistant
HP Support Assistant can automatically detect and install updates.
- Download or open HP Support Assistant: HP Support Assistant | HP® Support
- Run a full system check and install all recommended updates, including BIOS and chipset.
Disable Edge Secure Network (Temporary Test)
Since the issue started after this appeared, test if disabling it helps:
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Click the Edge Secure Network icon (shield) in the top-right.
- Turn off the feature temporarily and observe if the issue persists.
Perform a Hard Reset
This can clear temporary glitches.
- Shut down the laptop.
- Disconnect the power adapter and all peripherals.
- Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds.
- Reconnect power and turn it on.
Check Display Settings
Sometimes resolution or refresh rate mismatches can cause flickering or black screens.
- Right-click on desktop → Display settings.
- Ensure resolution is set to Recommended.
- Click Advanced display settings → Check refresh rate (usually 60Hz).
If none of the above steps resolve the issue, consider:
- Connecting an external monitor to test if the issue is with the internal display.
- Running Windows System File Checker:
- Open Command Prompt as Admin.
- Run: sfc /scannow
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
