HP OmniBook Ultra 14 inch Laptop Next Gen AI PC 14-fd0000 (9J387AV)

I have a brand new Omnibook ultra 14 and noticed a few things (even after all Windows, HP, AMD  updates)

  1. Sometimes the screen goes black for less than a second, I can't associate any action to this because it happens randomly.
  2. Sometimes the refresh rate drops to like 40 for no reason
  3. Sometimess there's a delay of less than 1 second with the touchpad and the pointer
  4. When I'm playing some audio, sometimes there's like a small glitch with the audio, I can't see a pattern with this and Idk if it's something with the hardware

This is just about software because is a recent laptop?

@DanCC2, Thank you for your response.

Ah, now we're getting somewhere. That Event Viewer error you found is very useful:

🔍 What does this mean?

  • amduw23g is related to the AMD User Mode Driver (UWP variant) — often tied to power saving and display enhancements in modern AMD GPUs.
  • Problem Status 0xC00000E5 = STATUS_DLL_INIT_FAILED → This usually means a driver or service failed to initialize properly, possibly due to:
    • A corrupt or mismatched driver.
    • Permission conflict (especially on UWP-based drivers like this).
    • Or Windows blocking a startup service it thinks is unstable.

This directly relates to your black screen, refresh rate drop, and even touchpad delay (if the system freezes briefly when the GPU stutters).

Action Plan

Fully Clean AMD Driver Using AMD Cleanup Utility

To ensure the problem driver is completely removed:

Install the AMD Graphics Driver from HP (not AMD)

Go to the HP OmniBook Ultra 14-fd0000 drivers page, and:

  • Download the specific AMD Graphics Driver for your model (even if it’s an older version).
  • Install that — HP-certified drivers are tuned for your exact hardware setup.

Avoid downloading the latest one from AMD.com for now — they often push bleeding-edge drivers not yet fully validated for OEM laptops.

Disable Problematic AMD Services (optional, advanced)

If you're still getting amduw23g issues:

  • Open Registry Editor → Navigate to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\amduw23g.
  • Set Start DWORD value to 4 (Disabled).
  • Reboot.

This disables the service that failed to start. It may reduce certain power-saving features, but if it stops the flickering and refresh rate drops, it's worth testing.

BIOS Update + Chipset

  • Update the BIOS from HP site (check for new microcode that may address GPU init bugs).
  • Also install the AMD Chipset Drivers from HP (not AMD.com), as they contain essential PCI and power management fixes.

🧪 Optional: Log Next Failure

If you want to keep logs to show HP Support or track when it fails again:

  • Open Event Viewer > Custom Views > Administrative Events.
  • Filter by “Display” or “DriverFrameworks-UserMode” to see GPU and service-related issues.

I hope this helps!

@DanCC2, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're experiencing some frustrating issues with your new AI PC, particularly with display problems, touchpad delays, and audio glitches. Let's break down the potential causes and solutions to help you get everything running smoothly.

Since you've already updated Windows, HP, and AMD drivers, you're on the right track. Here’s a closer look at what might still be happening:

Display Going Black Randomly

  • Likely Cause: This could be due to the AMD graphics driver or power-saving display settings.
  • Action Steps:
    • Go to Device Manager > Display Adapters > AMD Radeon > Right-click > Properties > Events to check for any unusual logs.
    • In AMD Adrenalin Software, under Display, disable Vari-Bright and Panel Self Refresh. These features can sometimes cause flickering or blackouts, especially when running on battery.
    • Set the refresh rate to 60Hz manually from Display Settings if it's currently set to a dynamic rate.

Refresh Rate Drops Randomly

  • Likely Cause: Windows or AMD may be dynamically adjusting the refresh rate to save power.
  • Action Steps:
    • Go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced Display Settings and set the refresh rate to a fixed value (like 120Hz or 60Hz, depending on what your panel supports).
    • Disable Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) in Graphics settings under “Display > Graphics > Default graphics settings.”

Touchpad Delay

  • Likely Cause: This could be related to precision touchpad power-saving settings or a conflict with AMD firmware.
  • Action Steps:
    • Go to Device Manager > Human Interface Devices, find the touchpad (usually labeled as HID-compliant touchpad), right-click > Properties > Power Management tab > uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”
    • Under Settings > Devices > Touchpad, increase sensitivity to “High” to reduce perceived lag.

Audio Glitches

  • Likely Cause: Power management settings or background processes may be interrupting audio.
  • Action Steps:
    • Go to Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers, right-click your audio device (e.g., Realtek or AMD), and choose Update driver or roll back if the issue started after the last update.
    • Open HP Support Assistant and run the audio checkup to rule out hardware issues.
    • Try disabling "Audio Enhancements" in Sound Settings > Playback Device > Properties > Enhancements tab.
    • Set the power plan to Best Performance in Power & Battery settings.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Sorry I haven't been able to fix any of the issues but I noticed a couple of things

1. While in the BIOS I didn't notice any sort of delay with the touchpad, the same with using an external mouse

2. In  Device manager > Display Driver > AMD Radeon(MT) 880M Graphics, all the events seems alright except for this one:

Device PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_150E&SUBSYS_8CDD103C&REV_C4\4&34bad5bf&0&0041 had a problem starting.

Hey @Max3Aj,

Most of the issues seems to be fixed but I had to do a fresh install of Windows 11 instead of the Safe Mode process because in the login Windows said that couldn't use my PIN.

I did install the drivers from just HP as you said and it's working again, so I'm accepting your anwser as the solution, thanks!

The remaining problem is with the delay, after some additional testing I noticed that if I unplug the laptop, after a few seconds the delay issue doesn't occur anymore. And when it's plugged in it comes back, again after a few seconds. Any idea why does this happen ?

Hey, @DanCC2, Thank you for your response. That’s awesome to hear! 🎉 Super glad the fresh Windows 11 install + HP drivers sorted out the black screen and refresh rate issues — seriously, nice work sticking through all that.

Now about that delay only when plugged in — very interesting, and yeah, there’s a good explanation for it:

Likely Cause: Power Plan + AMD Power Management Behavior

When your laptop is plugged in, the system typically uses the "Balanced" or "HP Recommended" power plan, which might:

  • Boost CPU/GPU performance,
  • Enable certain background services or power states,
  • OR (ironically) introduce input delay due to power-saving features meant for plugged-in use (especially from AMD's firmware-level power tuning).

When you're on battery, the laptop often disables those enhancements to conserve power — and boom, the input delay disappears. Classic modern AMD behavior 😅

Fix It with These Steps:

Set Power Mode to “Best Performance” (Even While Plugged In)

  • Go to Settings > System > Power & Battery.
  • Under Power Mode (when plugged in), set it to Best performance.

This disables many of the power-saving quirks that might be introducing delay.

Switch to “High Performance” Power Plan (or create one)

  • Open Control Panel > Power Options.
  • If you don’t see High Performance, click "Show additional plans".
  • Select High performance
(Or create a custom one and tweak as needed.)

AMD Radeon Settings (Optional Advanced Tweak)

  • Open AMD Adrenalin Software.
  • Navigate to Settings > Graphics > Advanced.
  • Disable:
    • Radeon Chill
    • Vari-Bright
    • Any Adaptive Sync or Frame Rate Target Control.

These are good for power savings or thermals but can mess with responsiveness.

Check Touchpad Driver Power Settings

  • Go to Device Manager > Human Interface Devices.
  • Right-click HID-compliant touchpad > Properties > Power Management.
  • Uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”.

Do the same for USB Input Devices too if any show up.

Test After Each Change

Try plugging in the charger after each setting tweak and see which one solves the lag for good.

Take care and have a great day.
