My HP Envy laptop is only three years old and was purchased at Best Buy. It no longer has any product coverage or warranties. Today the screen suddenly kept flickering off. It was not a battery issue. Eventually it got to the point where it would not turn on at all. The power indicator on the side of the laptop was still on showing that it was receiving power.

I took it to geek squad, who said they have never seen this issue before where it is not total motherboard failure, but the screen will not turn on at all for them to diagnose anything

they told me that I basically need to purchase a whole new laptop even though it’s only three years old. They suggested I reach out and see if this is a problem with my particular model or not.  any advice would be much appreciated

@Tharina212, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

I understand how frustrating it must be to have your HP Envy laptop screen stop working unexpectedly, especially after just three years of use. I’ll do my best to help you troubleshoot this issue.

Try These Steps:

Perform a Hard Reset

This can help clear any temporary hardware glitches.

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Disconnect the power adapter.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power adapter and try turning it on again.

Test with an External Monitor

To check if the issue is with the screen or the graphics system:

  • Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV using HDMI.
  • Power on the laptop.
  • Press Windows + P and tap the arrow keys to cycle through display modes (e.g., Duplicate, Extend, Second screen only), then press Enter.

If the external display works, the issue is likely with the laptop screen, cable, or backlight.

Perform a BIOS Recovery

If the screen is completely black but the laptop powers on:

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Press and hold Windows + B, then press and hold the power button for 2-3 seconds.
  • Release all keys. The BIOS recovery screen should appear if the display is functional.

If None of the Above Work:

  • It’s possible the display cable is loose or damaged, or the screen itself has failed.
  • If the external monitor works, a screen replacement may be a cost-effective fix.
  • If no display works at all, it could be a GPU or motherboard issue, which may require a deeper hardware diagnosis.

In that case, we suggest you please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.
