Hi @Sensortest,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP laptop powers on, but the display stays black or doesn’t respond. This can feel really unsettling. Let’s try a few proven steps to bring that screen back to life:
1. Check for Power and Indicators
- Make sure the power light and Caps Lock/Num Lock LEDs behave normally.
- If you see blinking patterns (e.g., 3 long and 2 short blinks), that’s a diagnostic code indicating a hardware issue.
2. Perform a Hard Reset
- Turn off the laptop and unplug the charger.
- Remove the battery (if removable).
- Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
- Reconnect the charger (leave the battery out for now) and try powering on.
3. Test with an External Display
- Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV via HDMI.
- If the external display works, the issue is likely with the internal screen or its cable.
4. Run HP Diagnostics
- If the screen stays black but the laptop powers on, press Esc repeatedly right after turning it on, then F2 for diagnostics.
- If nothing shows, the problem may be deeper (motherboard, GPU, or display cable).
5. Reset BIOS
- If you can access the BIOS, restore defaults.
- If not, disconnect the main battery and CMOS battery for a few minutes (if accessible).
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
