Hi @laura971,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP laptop is experiencing an issue where the screen fails to wake up from sleep mode, leaving only the keyboard lights on. This can be frustrating, but there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem.

  • Update Graphics Drivers: Outdated or incompatible graphics drivers can sometimes cause issues with sleep mode and screen waking. Visit the HP support website or the website of your graphics card manufacturer to download and install the latest drivers for your specific model.
  • Adjust Power Settings: Sometimes, certain power settings can interfere with the sleep mode function. Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options, and then click on "Change plan settings" next to your selected power plan. From there, you can adjust the settings for when the display should turn off or when the computer should go to sleep.
  • Check for Windows Updates: Ensure that your operating system is up to date by checking for Windows updates. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and click "Check for updates." Install any available updates and restart your laptop if prompted.
  • Disable Fast Startup: Fast Startup is a feature in Windows that can sometimes cause issues with sleep mode and waking from sleep. You can disable Fast Startup by going to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do. Then, click on "Change settings that are currently unavailable," and uncheck the box next to "Turn on fast startup (recommended)."
  • Check BIOS Settings: Sometimes, incorrect BIOS settings can cause issues with sleep mode. Access the BIOS settings by restarting your laptop and pressing the appropriate key (often Del or F2) during startup. Look for any settings related to power management or sleep mode, and ensure they are configured correctly.
  • Run System File Checker: Corrupted system files can also cause sleep mode issues. Open Command Prompt as an administrator, and then type the command "sfc /scannow" (without quotes) and press Enter. This will scan and repair any corrupted system files.
  • Perform a System Restore: If the problem started recently, you can try restoring your system to a previous point when sleep mode was working correctly. Go to Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore, and follow the on-screen instructions to choose a restore point.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, it's possible that there may be a hardware problem with your laptop's display or motherboard.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
