The touchpad on my 2 year old HP Spectre x360 has a mind of its own. Sometimes it will barely respond, but more often and more disruptively, the cursor will hop around the screen, clicking at random. The only way to get anything done is to disable the touchpad, which is difficult when your mouse keeps exiting you out of the settings.
I had this issue before and HP replaced my motherboard, which solved it for maybe 4 months. I have tried
1. Updating the touchpad drivers
2. Rolling back the touchpad drivers
3. Uninstalling and reinstalling the touchpad driver
4. Full update of all drivers from the HP website, including BIOS update
I was able to get a Failure ID from the diagnostic for both the Left pointer and the touchpad tests, but I have no way of knowing what these mean, just that it's a "critical failure in [my] system that requires repair".

I had exactly the same problem. Sent it in for warranty repair, they replaced the touchpad, and it worked for about 3 weeks before the problem recurred. Am going to go for another warranty repair, but will buy another laptop in the interim--it's pointless having a laptop that is gone for repair for months at a time.

It's not a cheap laptop, so I'm really disappointed in HP and will definitely not buy my next computer from them. I have found that turning off the touchscreen helps a little bit, but I still get this issue. The best I've been able to do is write a hotkey script so that I can toggle off the touchpad without having to use a mouse, so at least I'm able to stop the insanity and switch to my external mouse.
