HP ENVY 13-ay1000 x360 Convertible PC (3T486AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I've been using HP Envy x360 convertible laptop for a few years, mainly for content consumption or sometimes to illustrate, while drawing whenever I try to use the stylus with a little bit of force it causes light scratches, forcing me to avoid using the pen entirely which defeats the whole purpose of having a convertible touchscreen laptop,  I've tried a few short cuts here and there but nothing worked.

I don't know what to do, is this supposed to happen and what can I do to stop this permanently.

Hi @NJH603,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It’s not normal for a stylus to cause scratches on a screen, especially when using a convertible touchscreen laptop like the HP Envy x360. A touchscreen is designed to work smoothly with a stylus, particularly if it's compatible with the laptop. However, scratches can occur for a few reasons, and there are steps you can take to prevent them.

Check the Stylus Tip

  • Replace the stylus tip: The stylus tip could be worn out or rough, which can cause it to scratch the screen. You can check if the tip is damaged and replace it with a new one, ensuring it’s designed for your specific laptop model.
  • Use a softer tip: Some stylus tips are harder or sharper than others. Using a tip designed for a more delicate interaction with touchscreens could help.

Screen Protector

  • Applying a screen protector specifically designed for touchscreens can help prevent scratches. Many screen protectors are made to be smooth and will also help absorb any impact from the stylus.
  • Ensure the screen protector is compatible with stylus use and doesn't interfere with touchscreen sensitivity.

Ensure Proper Pressure

  • Avoid applying too much pressure: The screen is sensitive to pressure, and pressing down too hard with the stylus can cause scratches or other damage. Try to use a lighter touch when writing or drawing, especially if you're pressing with force.

Cleaning the Screen and Stylus

  • Regularly clean both the screen and stylus: Dirt, dust, and debris can get caught between the stylus and screen, which can cause scratches. Use a soft microfiber cloth to clean both the screen and the stylus tip regularly.
  • Use a stylus with a built-in cleaning feature: Some styluses come with a cleaning tip to reduce friction and prevent marks.

Consider Using a Different Stylus

  • Not all styluses are designed equally, and some may cause more friction on the screen than others. Consider testing a different model of stylus that is designed specifically for use with your HP Envy x360's display.

Update the Drivers

  • Ensure your device drivers are up to date: Sometimes, issues with the stylus can arise from outdated drivers. Check for any updates related to the stylus or touchscreen input, which may improve performance and reduce any unnecessary friction.

Check for Screen Damage

  • If none of the above work, it’s possible that the screen has a defect or is already slightly damaged, which could make it more prone to scratching.

Note:

While stylus use shouldn't cause scratches, worn tips, applying too much pressure, or a dirty screen can all contribute to the problem. By addressing these factors, using a proper stylus, and considering a screen protector, you should be able to prevent further damage to your laptop's display.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks the tips, I don't like screen protectors but I guess I got no choice and I'll look for softer nibs for my stylus.
