Troubleshooting black screen issues on HP Notebooks: Click here to view the instructions!
HP Recommended

I start the laptop normally. The first time, the monitor occasionally turns black when I move the mouse, then briefly returns to normal, then turns black again. The second time I start it up, the monitor works normally. I reinstalled Windows 11 on the laptop. I installed all Windows and driver updates and also checked and updated them using the Intel Driver Assistant.

I also ran HP tests and found no errors.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi @Bernstone59

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

The intermittent black screen when moving the mouse may be caused by a graphics driver conflict, display cable issue, or power-saving setting.

I’m really sorry this is happening—it’s unsettling when your screen flickers and fades, especially after a fresh reinstall and full update.

You’ve done everything right so far, and we’ll build on that momentum to restore a smooth, responsive experience.

Step-by-step actions to resolve intermittent black screen

Disable Panel Self Refresh (Intel graphics only)

  • Open Intel Graphics Command Center
  • Go to Display > Power
  • Turn off Panel Self Refresh
  • This feature can cause flickering or black screens during idle or mouse movement

Adjust Windows power settings

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options
  • Select High Performance or Balanced
  • Click Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings
  • Under Display > Enable adaptive brightness, set to Off
  • Under PCI Express > Link State Power Management, set to Off

Check external display behavior

  • Connect your laptop to an external monitor via HDMI or USB-C
  • If the external display works consistently, the issue may be with the internal panel or cable

Clean boot to rule out software conflicts

  • Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter
  • Under Services, check Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all
  • Go to Startup > Open Task Manager, and disable all startup items
  • Restart and observe if the issue persists

Run HP display diagnostics again

Update or reinstall graphics drivers manually

Let me know how the external monitor behaves or if you’d like help identifying your exact graphics configuration. You’ve already taken all the right steps—this is just about fine-tuning the last few settings.
