HP Pavilion x360 Convertible Laptop PC 14-dh0005nh
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an HP Pavilion x360 about a month ago I had an issue, with phantom touches in a straight vertical line about two-thirds from the left side of the display. I didn't have time to deal with that then, so I disabled my touchscreen in the device manager. I enabled my touch screen, but it has a straight vertical line in that spot, where it won't register either touch or a stylus. I already tried updating the driver.

I appreciate your help!

Hi @Wilheim ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP Pavilion x360 is experiencing a hardware issue with the touchscreen. The straight vertical line that causes phantom touches and the current unresponsiveness in that area indicate that the touchscreen digitizer might be damaged or malfunctioning.

Here are some steps you can take to further diagnose and possibly fix the issue:

1. Check for Physical Damage

  • Inspect the screen closely for any visible cracks, dents, or other signs of physical damage. Even minor damage can cause touch issues.

2. Calibrate the Touchscreen

  • Sometimes recalibrating the touchscreen can help if the issue is due to software calibration rather than hardware.
  • To calibrate the touchscreen:
    1. Open Control Panel.
    2. Go to Hardware and Sound > Tablet PC Settings.
    3. In the Display tab, select Calibrate.
    4. Follow the on-screen instructions to calibrate your touchscreen.

3. Reinstall Touchscreen Drivers

  • Uninstall the current touchscreen drivers and reinstall them:
    1. Open Device Manager.
    2. Expand Human Interface Devices.
    3. Right-click on HID-compliant touch screen and select Uninstall device.
    4. Restart your laptop, and Windows should automatically reinstall the drivers.

4. Perform a Hard Reset

  • A hard reset can sometimes resolve hardware detection issues.
  • To perform a hard reset:
    1. Turn off your laptop.
    2. Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
    3. Hold down the power button for about 15 seconds.
    4. Reconnect the battery and power adapter, then turn on the laptop.

5. Test in Safe Mode

  • Boot your laptop into Safe Mode to see if the issue persists. If the touch screen works in Safe Mode, a background application or driver might be causing the problem.
  • To enter Safe Mode:
    1. Restart your laptop and repeatedly press the F8 key (or Shift + F8).
    2. Select Safe Mode from the Advanced Boot Options menu.

6. Update BIOS and Chipset Drivers

  • Sometimes updating the BIOS and chipset drivers can resolve hardware-related issues.
  • Visit the HP support website, enter your laptop model, and download the latest BIOS and chipset drivers.

7. Run Hardware Diagnostics HP PCs - Testing for hardware failures

  • Use HP’s built-in diagnostics to check for hardware issues:
    1. Restart your laptop and repeatedly press F2 to enter the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics menu.
    2. Run a full touchscreen test to check for any detected hardware issues.

8. Disable and Re-enable Touchscreen in BIOS

  • Sometimes toggling the touchscreen on and off in the BIOS can help:
    1. Restart your laptop and press F10 to enter the BIOS.
    2. Find the touch screen option and disable it, save changes, and exit.
    3. Reboot into BIOS again and re-enable the touchscreen.

9. Consider a Factory Reset

  • As a last resort, you can try a factory reset to rule out any software issues. This will erase all your data, so be sure to back up important files.
