Firstly, let's perform Windows Update and HP Support Assistant:

To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Install updates from HP Support Assistant: Go to Download HP Support Assistant to install the tool.

  1. To open HP Support Assistant, double-click the HP Support Assistant icon https://support.hp.com/doc-images/932/c05040382.jpg.
  2. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
  3. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
  4. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
  5. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
  6. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

And, also run BIOS Update: Follow steps from the link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c00042629

If the issue persists perform a touch screen diagnostic test in HP Hardware Diagnostics from here: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03488148

Hey Esther918,

I have just had to learn to live with the issue since October 2018, as HP couldn’t provide me with a solution. I have run every update, followed all troubleshooting guidelines they’ve sent me and let them remotely access my laptop to try and solve the problem, but nothing has worked. I am extremely disappointed in my experience as when the issue began it was only just out of warranty, and now it’s so far gone that no one will even bother trying to help me unless I want to pay exorbitant fees to send it off.

Esther918, my best advice to you would be to just disable your touchscreen, as it doesn’t look like HP will be fixing this issue anytime soon...

Hi Esther,

ive been in contact with HP regarding this issue again as it returned when I tried to update to Windows 10. Definitely recommend giving them a call - it’s a hardware fault and I now have to send my laptop away to be fixed in Singapore.

I disabled the touch screen 12 months ago and now the problem is back. I have wiped my pc clean and it is still happening. The mouse keeps moving to the left hand side where the start menu appears. Everything on my desktop has to be in the middle of my screen or they keep opening. HP have known about this for over two years and still it is happening. That is disgusting. I am going to run the tests that are suggested in the oldest comment and see what I can find out. Let me know if you found another solution.

Hi!

totally understand how frustrating this is - made using my laptop realllly difficult for nearly 2yrs!

HP is award of the problem now and willing to fix it - it is a hardware issue called ghost screen and the only way to fix it is to replace the entire touch screen unit. get in contact with HP and they’ll arrange a free repair - was a bit of a painful process to seek help and actually get them to follow through but they fixed it for me in the end so I 100% recommend you try the same.

best of luck 😊
