After installing a new screen on my laptop, the touch screen feature is not working. I replaced the screen with the exact same model as the original one. I have tried looking for new drivers, disabling/enabling the driver, uninstalling/installing the driver, updating firmware, and reseating the 40-pin connector multiple times -- nothing works. The HID-compliant touch screen shows up fine in the Device Manager and everything looks like it should -- just nothing happens when actually touching the screen to operate the laptop.

It sounds like you’ve done a very thorough job already — and the fact that the HID-compliant touch screen still appears in Device Manager means the touch controller is being detected by Windows, but it’s not actually registering input. That usually narrows it down to a hardware signal or connection path problem between the touch digitizer and the motherboard, rather than a software one. Here’s how you can confirm that:
Double-Check the Replacement Screen
Even though it’s the same model number, some replacement panels (especially third-party ones) omit the touch digitizer layer or come from non-touch variants.
Compare your original screen’s part number (printed on the back of the panel, often starting with LP, B, or N) to the new one. If even one character differs, it could be a non-touch or incompatible revision.
Inspect the Touch Digitizer Cable Path
On most HP touchscreen laptops, the touch signal travels either through an integrated 40-pin cable (shared with display) or a separate smaller ribbon connected to the motherboard.
Make sure both are firmly seated. If your model has two connectors and only one was reattached, the touch layer won’t respond.
Run HP UEFI Touchscreen Test (if supported)
Turn off the laptop, power it on, and press Esc repeatedly, then F2 for diagnostics.
Look under Component Tests → Touchscreen.
If the test reports “Not detected,” the hardware connection to the digitizer is not being read.
Check Windows Calibration and Power Settings
Open Control Panel → Hardware and Sound → Tablet PC Settings and make sure the screen is listed as touch-enabled.
In Device Manager, under Human Interface Devices, right-click the HID-compliant touch screen → Properties → Power Management, and uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”

Hi Garp_Senchau, thanks so much for your thorough response. Based on your explanation, I believe i was able to confirm the issue was hardware related. i performed the BIOS touchscreen test and it did not recognize anything. anyhow, no i have a different problem. i unfortunately damaged the new display trying to get the plastic frame back in place (Ugh!). as a result, i installed ANOTHER new screen -- this one is showing a different problem. This time, the device manager is not detecting a HID-compliant touchscreen. one of the two I2C HID devices is failing to start (which i am pretty sure is the touchscreen I2C driver). I am getting "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" for this driver. i have tried a few things (disable/enable, uninstall/reinstall, etc.), but i cannot get it to start. any ideas what may be happening?

Check BIOS Settings
Restart and press Esc to enter the HP Startup Menu.
Press F10 for BIOS Setup.
Ensure any Touchscreen or I2C settings are enabled.
Update or Rollback Driver
Go to Device Manager > I2C HID Device.
Right-click and select Update Driver.
If no update is found, try Roll Back Driver (if available).
If needed, visit HP's support site and download the latest touchscreen driver.
Reinstall the I2C Driver
In Device Manager, right-click the touchscreen/I2C device and choose Uninstall.
Restart your PC to let Windows reinstall the driver.
Run Windows Update
Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and click Check for Updates.
Check for Conflicting Devices
In Device Manager, look under Human Interface Devices for any devices that could conflict with the touchscreen.
Right-click and Disable them one by one to check.
Reset BIOS to Default
In BIOS, choose Restore Defaults or Load Default Settings.
Save and exit, then restart your PC.
