Hi everyone,

I have an HP Spectre x360 16 with an NVIDIA RTX 4050. For a long time, this laptop has had an intermittent stutter issue where the screen and keyboard input freeze for around 0.5 seconds. I was never able to fully troubleshoot it, so I decided to do a clean Windows install to see if that would fix it.

Unfortunately, the stutter issue is still present, and now I have an even bigger problem that is affecting daily use:

The touchpad is extremely inconsistent and often stops working.

I do not think this is a hardware failure, because when the touchpad works, it works normally.

After the clean install, I went into Windows Update and repeatedly updated/restarted until all available drivers were automatically installed.

From a full shutdown/startup, I usually get one of these two scenarios:

1. Touchpad works at first, then dies later

  • Sometimes it fails very quickly
  • Sometimes it lasts for hours before stopping
  • When this happens, I do not see the I2C flashing issue
  • A temporary workaround I found is closing the lid (I set lid close action to “do nothing”)
  • After reopening, the touchpad works again for a while, but eventually dies again

2. Touchpad does not work from startup

  • In this case, I do see the I2C flashing issue
  • Sometimes disabling and re-enabling the I2C device temporarily helps
  • Often it takes multiple restarts or full shutdowns before I can get back to scenario 1

At this point, I need a set of troubleshooting steps I can try one by one to fix this properly. Constant restarts and shutdowns are very disruptive to my workflow.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I understand your HP Spectre x360 touchpad intermittently failing due to I2C HID issues. Let’s go through a few checks.

Install HP-Specific Drivers (Important – Don’t Rely Only on Windows Update)

  1. Go to the HP Support website for your exact Spectre x360 16 model.
  2. Download and install:
    • Chipset driver
    • Intel Serial IO driver
    • Touchpad / HID driver (if listed)
  3. Install them in this order: Chipset → Serial IO → others.
  4. Restart after each installation.
  5. Test touchpad stability.

Reinstall I2C HID Device Properly

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand “Human Interface Devices.”
  3. Right-click “I2C HID Device” and select Uninstall device.
  4. Check “Delete driver” if available.
  5. Restart the laptop to reinstall cleanly.

Disable Power Saving on I2C / HID Devices

  1. In Device Manager, open properties of:
    • I2C HID Device
    • Intel Serial IO I2C Host Controller
  2. Go to “Power Management” tab.
  3. Uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”
  4. Apply changes.
  5. Restart and test.

Update BIOS (Very Important for This Issue)

  1. Go to HP Support for your model.
  2. Download the latest BIOS update.
  3. Install it with the charger connected.
  4. Do not interrupt the process.
  5. Restart and test behavior.

Check Windows power settings.

  1. Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
  2. Select “Balanced” or “HP Recommended.”
  3. Click “Change advanced power settings.”
  4. Disable USB selective suspend.
  5. Apply and restart.

If the issue still occurs after these steps, let me know if the I2C device shows any warning icon or keeps reconnecting/disappearing in Device Manager, that will help pinpoint it further.

Hello, I have (attempted) to go through each step, but the issue is still present. 

HP specific drivers - Done 

Reinstall I2C HID Device - Done numerous time now/before

Disable Power Saving - Done 

Update BIOS - Done 

Windows power settings - Could not find "USB selective suspend"? 

 

The issue is still present. The touchpad either (1) stops working for a period, comes back alive for a while and dies again - where I2C does not show warning. Or (2) Shows warning on startup or after sleep an does not work at all.

Test in BIOS (Critical Isolation Step)

  1. Restart the laptop and press F10 for BIOS.
  2. Try moving or interacting with the touchpad in BIOS.

If touchpad fails in BIOS it points towards hardware issue.

Yes It works in BIOS. As I've said its definitely not a hardware issue, as when the touchpad is working it performs everything correctly... I've tried everything online to try to fix it assuming its some software glitch from a clean install (also I've done multiple clean installs too).

Thank you for confirming, that detail helps a lot.

Since the touchpad works perfectly in BIOS, we can confidently rule out hardware. Combined with everything you’ve already tried , this points very specifically to a Windows-level I2C communication instability, not a generic driver issue.

 

1. Force Install Intel Serial IO (Clean Override)

Even if installed, corruption can persist.

  • Go to Device Manager
  • Expand System Devices
  • Right-click Intel Serial IO I2C Host Controller
  • Select "Uninstall device."
  • Check “Attempt to remove driver."
  • Restart

Then:

  • Manually install the latest Intel Serial IO driver from HP (not Windows Update)

This is the most critical component for I2C stability.

Hello, the same issue arises - I2C HID Device runs into an error code 10 straight away. I've already tried reinstalling the ' Intel Serial IO I2C Host Controller' several time before to no avail. I've also tried multiple restarts and shutdowns after the reinstallation.

Let’s go through a few further checks.

Force Clean Driver Stack Rebuild (Deeper Removal)

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand “Human Interface Devices” and “System Devices.”
  3. Uninstall ALL of the following (one by one):
    • I2C HID Device
    • Intel Serial IO I2C Host Controller
    • HID-compliant touchpad (if listed)
  4. Check “Delete driver software” wherever available.
  5. Restart the laptop twice (important for full rebuild).

Install Drivers in Strict Order (Critical)

  1. Install Chipset driver first (from HP site).
  2. Restart.
  3. Install Intel Serial IO driver next.
  4. Restart again.
  5. Then allow Windows Update to install remaining HID drivers.

(This order is important—wrong sequence causes I2C instability.)

Disable Modern Standby (S0) – Advanced Step

  1. Open Command Prompt as Admin.
  2. Run: powercfg /a (check if S0 is enabled).
  3. If S0 is active, disable via registry:
    • Open Registry Editor
    • Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power
    • Set CsEnabled = 0 (create if missing)
  4. Restart the system.

(This helps because I2C devices often break with Modern Standby.)

Check Event Viewer for I2C Failures

  1. Press Windows + X → Event Viewer.
  2. Go to Windows Logs > System.
  3. Look for errors related to:
    • I2C
    • HID
    • ACPI
  4. Note recurring driver names if visible.

(This helps identify the exact failing driver.)

The problem remain unfixed. 

Clean Rebuild - 

I've tried this multiple times, it seems if I remain on windows for even a short period, they auto download the relevant missing drivers again. Does not work. 

Disable modern standby - 

Does not work, doing so does not allow the laptop to sleep and wake properly.

 

What I can see right now is either: 

Laptop launches with error on i2c hid device, elan input device likely missing - in this case the touchpad never works; or 

Laptop launches with no errors, works for a while then breaks. Reset by closing the lid, rotating the laptop vertical or flipping it 180 degrees allows it to come back to life again.
