Hello!

My trackpad button won't click

Thanks for sharing that—when a trackpad button suddenly stops responding, it can really throw off your workflow. Let’s walk through a few recommended steps to get that click working again:

 

🛠 Step 1: Check Touchpad Settings

  • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  • Go to Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
  • Make sure the touchpad is enabled, and check if Tap with a single finger to single-click is turned on (this can help as a temporary workaround too).

🔄 Step 2: Perform a Hard Reset

This clears out any temporary glitches:

  1. Shut down your laptop completely.
  2. Unplug the power adapter.
  3. Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  4. Plug it back in and power on.

📥 Step 3: Update Touchpad Drivers

  • Right-click the Start button > Device Manager.
  • Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
  • Right-click your touchpad > Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.

If that doesn’t help, visit HP’s official driver page and enter your laptop model to download the latest touchpad driver manually.

🧪 Step 4: Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Restart your laptop and press Esc repeatedly, then F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Select Component Tests > Mouse/Touchpad, then follow the on-screen instructions.

This will help confirm whether the issue is hardware-related.

🔄 Step 5: Windows Update

  • Go to Settings > Windows Update and check for any pending updates.
  • Sometimes a system update can resolve compatibility issues with input devices.
