HP ENVY 17 Laptop PC 17-ch2000 (4U9X6AV)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have HP Envy 17 ch200 (Product number: 646R0UA#ABA) with Windows 10, expanded memory (32 GB), and expanded SSD storage (2 TB). The touchpad is way too sensitive. Sometimes something as light as the cuff on my sleeve is interpreted as a touch and causes all kinds of issues, depending on what I am doing and where the cursor is at the time. Hovering over a clickable area often acts like I clicked on it. Just moving the cursor over something frequently does the same thing.  I have tried changing the sensitivity in Touchpad settings and ran the driver update process in Device Manager (best driver already installed) but haven't seen any improvement. I also checked the HP support pages for an updated driver but the only drivers there are for Windows 11. The installed driver is Synaptics Precision Touchpad Filter Driver version 19.5.35.78. Any suggestions on how to resolve this problem? I really prefer using the Touchpad over a mouse.

Also, while the touchpad is usually too sensitive, it frequently isn't responsive when I try to use one finger drag to move the cursor. I use this function a lot in Publisher and also with Audacity when I am digitizing vinyl and cassettes.

@taherte2, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Thanks for the detailed breakdown — that's super helpful. You're dealing with a combination of oversensitivity and inconsistent responsiveness, which is frustrating, especially when you're working in apps that require precision like Publisher or Audacity.

Try Disabling “Tap to Click” Temporarily

Since even a cuff or a hover triggers clicks, this can help confirm if tap sensitivity is the culprit.

Go to Settings > Devices > Touchpad

Uncheck “Tap with a single finger to single-click”

See if that reduces accidental interactions.

Adjust Palm Rejection

Go to Settings > Devices > Touchpad

Under "Change the touchpad sensitivity", set it to "Low sensitivity"

Also ensure "Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected" is disabled (to auto-disable when you plug in a mouse temporarily)

One-Finger Drag Lagging?

That issue sounds like the tap-and-drag gesture isn't being recognized reliably.

Fix:

Go to Settings > Devices > Touchpad > Advanced gestures

Try mapping one-finger drag or three-finger drag to custom functions (if available)

If not responsive, we may be dealing with latency introduced by background apps or power settings.

You can try setting:

Power Plan to High Performance

In Device Manager, under the touchpad, disable "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" in Power Management tab.

I hope this helps.

I implemented your suggestions except the "adjust palm rejection". I'll use the computer for awhile and see how it goes.

The changes that I tried helped the over-sensitivity issue but of course I lost the tap feature. You said that was a temporary change so where do we go from here?

Hey @taherte2,

Thank you for your response

I meant to temporarily disable it just to see if that's causing the issue. You can restore it by following the same steps

Go to Settings > Devices > Touchpad

Check “Tap with a single finger to single-click”

I hope this helps.

I know how to restore the setting but what have we learned about the problem and how do I resolve it? How can I make the touchpad less sensitive when it is already set at Low Sensitivity? Yes, I can turn off the setting but what's the sense in having a TOUCHpad if you can't use it? And I use it exclusively.
