I am trying to connect a Samsung Freestyle digital projector to my laptop via hdmi.  When I plug the hdmi into my laptop and the micro-hdmi into the Freestyle, the screen on my laptop pulsates.  The Freestyle shows that the hdmi is connected but I cannot get the laptop to communicate and see my screen on the projection.  I have pushed Windows Key and P to select duplicate screen but to no avail.  I looked in owner's manual for my Envy and do not see a solution.  Seems like it should be plug and play.

I can get the Freestyle to work wirelessly but I will have times that I won't have wifi and need to run the Freestyle with the hdmi cable.

Hi @Jimnal1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing an issue with your HP Envy laptop's HDMI output not properly communicating with your Samsung Freestyle projector. Here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot this.

Check the Cable and Adapter: Ensure that both the HDMI cable and the micro-HDMI adapter (if used) are functioning correctly. If possible, try using another HDMI cable or a different adapter to rule out the possibility of a faulty cable.

Display Settings:

  • Press Windows Key + P again, and make sure you select "Duplicate" or "Extend" to mirror or extend your display onto the projector. If that doesn't work, try manually configuring the display settings by:
    • Right-clicking on your desktop and selecting Display settings.
    • Scroll down to Multiple displays and click the Detect button.
    • If your laptop detects the projector, you can select the display mode (Duplicate, Extend, etc.).

Graphics Drivers:

  • Sometimes, outdated or corrupted graphics drivers can cause issues with external displays. Ensure your graphics drivers are up-to-date:
    • Open Device Manager (right-click Start button > Device Manager).
    • Expand the Display adapters section and right-click on your graphics card, then choose Update driver.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to check for and install any available updates.

Projector Settings:

  • On the Samsung Freestyle, ensure that the input source is set correctly to HDMI. You may need to manually change the input source via the projector's settings or remote control.

Test with Another HDMI Device:

  • If possible, connect your laptop to a different HDMI-equipped device (e.g., a TV or another projector) to confirm whether the issue is specific to the Freestyle projector or with your laptop's HDMI output.

Restart Both Devices:

  • Try restarting both the laptop and the Freestyle projector. Sometimes, a fresh connection can help resolve issues.

Resolution and Refresh Rate:

  • If the projector is not displaying anything or shows a pulsing screen, the resolution or refresh rate settings on your laptop might be incompatible with the projector. In Display Settings, under Advanced display settings, check the resolution and refresh rate. Set them to standard values like 1920x1080 and 60Hz to see if it resolves the issue.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, there may be a deeper hardware or compatibility issue. You might also want to try using an HDMI-to-USB adapter as a workaround if you face repeated issues with the HDMI connection.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
