I'm trying to connect my laptop to two external displays (one VGA, one HDMI). I have a USB-C to VGA adapter. However, when I plug it in Windows gives an error saying "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)". I've tried searching online and on this forum for a solution but I can't find any.
1) Is this machine capable of connecting a display via USB-C?
2) If so, does it need a specific brand \ type of adapter?
3) If not, is there any other way I could connect it to two screens? Could I try a standard USB to VGA adapter?
The above machine has 1 USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C™ (Data Transfer Only, 5 Gb/s signaling rate) port which does not support video out. Your machine probably has same port.
1 & 2: ditto
3. Yes, you can use USB-A hub/dock.
If you wish to have 2 or more external monitors (and notebook monitor - total 3), please enter your requirement on the following link and it will find for you few options on market today including some HP products:
Thanks for your very quick reply. You have answered my question!
I have two further questions if you don't mind? Some of the HP docks on the second link have this footnote: "For USB-C®functionality, host PC must support the DisplayPort™ Alt mode protocol through its USB-C®port. ". But others don't specify. Am I right in thinking that only those docks that don't have the message will work?
