Microsoft Windows 11

Greetings and thank you in advance for any information you can share re: my HP USB-C G5 Dock.  I have 2 monitors which have a VGA and HDMI port.  The docking station only has one HDMI port.  There are 2 Display Ports.  Do I need to get a Display port to HDMI cable to connect to my 2nd monitor?

Hi @skyglover

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I'm really sorry for the confusion with your monitor setup—it’s frustrating when everything’s connected but the ports don’t quite match. The good news is, your HP USB-C Dock G5 is fully capable of supporting dual displays, and you’re just one cable away from a smooth experience.

Here’s what you need to connect both monitors:

  • Since your dock has 1 HDMI port and 2 DisplayPorts, and your monitors support HDMI and VGA, you’ll need:
    • One standard HDMI cable for the first monitor
    • One DisplayPort to HDMI cable or adapter for the second monitor

This setup allows both monitors to receive digital video signals with full resolution and refresh rate support.

Why DisplayPort to HDMI works well here:

  • DisplayPort is fully compatible with HDMI using passive adapters or cables
  • Your dock’s DisplayPorts support DisplayPort 1.4, which can easily drive 1080p or 4K monitors via HDMI conversion
  • VGA is analog and less ideal—HDMI offers sharper image quality and better compatibility with Windows 11

Optional: Use DisplayPort to VGA if needed

If one monitor only accepts VGA and you prefer that input:

  • Use a DisplayPort to VGA active adapter
  • This requires a powered converter, not just a cable

Let me know your monitor models if you’d like help choosing the right adapter or cable. Once connected, your dual-monitor setup will feel seamless and responsive.
