HP EliteBook 840 G5
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Windows 10 Home 64bit.

Model: HP EliteBook 840 G5
Product number: 2FA70AV
Software build number: 17WWCSAT601#SABG#DABG
System BIOS: Q78 Ver. 01.18.01 - 11/24/2021

USB-C Type Features: Thunderbolt (supported), DisplayPort (supported)

Windows driver: HP Q78 1.17.0.0

When connecting external monitor via HDMI port or USB-C port, it is not detected by WIndows. I have all software up-to-date, including BIOS. I have also used Windows ToGo via USB3 to see if it might be WIndows problem, but it still doesn't detect the external monitor.

We have several laptops used in my household, two of them are HP EliteBook 840 G5. All laptops work alright with connecting to external monitor and/or TV using HDMI and USB-C ports, except the laptop I'm currently using. I have done mix-matching different cables and different monitors. All other laptops work, except the one I'm currently using. So, I believe the problem is with my current laptop.

I have also checked BIOS settings by comparing with other HP EliteBook 840 G5 working laptop. The different is, it has BIOS Q78 Ver. 01.04.00. Everything else seems the same.

I tried to roll-back the BIOS version, but could only go back as far as Q78 v01.14.01, where it showed "USB-C Controller Firmware Update failed on below Controller(s): USB-C Controller Firmware. Info: The new FW is not higher version.". It is now back to latest version Q78 Ver. 01.18.01.

It used to work fine a few years ago when I used it on dock (no longer have it with me) and also HDMI. I suspect it has something to do with BIOS update I made since, or some magic key-press I need to do, or something else.

What could be the cause and how to fix it? Thanks in advance.

@HanzChen

Does your monitor have DP input port ? Please try direct USB-C to DP direct cable.

Regards.

Monitor has DP port. The USB-C to DP cable works on the other laptop, but not the one I'm using.

I've tried these cable types : USB-C to DP, USB-C to HDMI, HDMI to HDMI. They work on all laptops, TVs, monitors.. except the laptop I'm currently using.

The USB-C port itself seems to work fine when plugged in with USB storage drive. I can access files normally.

I have the same problem on an HP 850 G5. After several updates (I don't know which one was) of drivers and operating system. The notebook does not recognize additional screens.

Did you find a solution?

Regards!

No solution yet. I think we are in the same situation. After updates of drivers, it becomes like this. Really hope someone in HP will come out with a solution.

Disconnect the battery, and cmos battery, for at least 1 minute. plug everything back in. At least you could use the HDMI port.

Unfortunately, it didn't make a difference.

The HDMI port stopped working, that's why started exploring using USB-C which apparently also couldn't work.

I have a HP Pavilion 15-cs0058od laptop. The HDMI port and USB3.1-A ports works perfectly to an external monitor. But my USB3-C port does not work with any display. I have tried two different brand mini USB3.1 docking stations with HDMI output. I want to connect the docking station's USB3.1-C cable to the laptop but the exteranl display does not work except the USB 3.1 ports work fine. I did the bios update, no change. I am certain it is the laptop's USB3.1-C port becuase the exact hookup to a mac book works fine.

Same issue here. Everything was working fine but once BIOS got updated (on 2022-03-26), USB-C to HDMI adaptor stopped working. I have a few different USB-C to HDMI adapters and they are no problems with ASUS and Dell laptop.
I have tried many conventions of enable/disable USB-C and Thunderbolt settings in the BIOS but nothing worked so far.
I guess HP new BIOS started restricting non-HP products or something? Nobody will buy HP laptop then..

Any workaround ?

I am also facing similar issue after BIOS update on 2022-03-26. My USB C to HDMI adaptor stopped working. Tried same adaptor on other laptop and its working fine. I got a new USB C adaptor and still it is not working. I cannot use my  second monitor and its impacting my day to day work.

Please help asap.
